For most people, if they go from the standard American diet to a raw vegan diet, they will lose a pound a day. Eventually, Daniel and his brothers become raw vegan icons. However, the diet stopped working. Unfortunately, Daniel’s testosterone was so low that the doctor was ready to prescribe testosterone right there and then. Instead, Daniel ate a piece of salmon and woke up with morning wood for the first time in a long time. Now, Daniel has a podcast called Breaking Normal. She started her career in nutrition by working in the ICU. Many people came into the ICU for lifestyle-related chronic conditions. For instance, people would be in the ICU due to an urgent amputation because of uncontrolled diabetes. At the ICU, Kara would see really severe problems that could have been prevented in the first place. So, Kara wanted to catch these issues way earlier in a way that was meaningful. After discovering CGMs, Kara realized how powerful of a tool they are for multiple reasons: They give us continuous insight into our metabolic health. CGMs are motivating for people. Lastly, the data you receive is personalized and actually works!   [06:35] What You Need To Know Before Getting A CGM The CGM is a small device, about the size of a quarter. It’s a medical device, so you need a prescription in order to receive it from your doctor. Sadly, they're most likely not going to do it unless you're a diabetic case. If you're generally a healthy person who wants to stay healthy, the chances of your doctor writing you a prescription is slim to none. The device goes on the back of the arm, you push the button, and it’s in there. It uses a needle for insertion. The needle is removed, and the only thing that's left below the surface of your skin is a flexible microfilament. The devices are factory calibrated, so there's no blood needing to be drawn. [10:45] What Should Your Blood Glucose Levels Be? When you’re thinking about fasting glucose, Kara recommends 70 to 90 range milligrams per deciliter. If you Google, “what's a healthy fasting glucose level?” It will probably tell you 70 to 100. There is research that indicates when we get to that 90 to 100 range, we're starting to see some increased risks. Shoot for 70 – 90 most of the time. After a meal, we want to see it returned back to baseline values, usually in that two-hour mark. Check how high your levels went after you ate – aim for 140 or less. On a keto diet, it shouldn’t go above 120. [15:00] Insulin Mediated Glucose Responses And Non-Insulin Mediated Glucose Responses After Exercise Our glucose can spike, and our body can deal with that glucose spike without utilizing insulin. The spike we get from exercise happens after a very high-intensity workout, or you're doing something rather strenuous. It makes sense that you're going to have a glucose spike because your current supply of energy in the body is not enough to meet the demands that you're placing it under. With exercise, we're simulating stress hormones, but we're also breaking down glycogen stores. The exercise is demanding energy, and it's getting used right away. The reason your body is stimulating a glucose response with high-intensity exercise is that it needs it. [20:35] When You Are Chronically Sleep Deprived, You Will Have Higher Levels of Cortisol The Next Morning When we think about optimizing glucose values, we always talk about diet, exercise, stress, and sleep; they're equal components of the picture. Sleep is something we really have to pay attention to. Poor glucose levels will affect the quality of your sleep. Also, a bad night of sleep is definitely going to affect your glucose values the next day. [24:30] What Happens When You Break A Fast With A High Carbohydrate Meal There's a lot of psychology that goes on with fasting – people will have a cheat meal after fasting. When you do that, you ruin most of the benefits. If you break a fast with carbs, you can see glucose levels higher than they've ever been for two days straight. Eating carbs after a fast is not a good strategy. Instead, break a fast with protein. The longer the fast, the stricter you want to be. [26:40] Why You Should Go For A Walk After You Eat A Meal   Walking after a meal can really dramatically stabilize glucose values. Most of our circulating glucose in the system is going to get picked up by the skeletal muscle. Gently stimulating your muscles and moving can make a really big difference. Walking is also good for mental health and stress reduction. [28:30] Other Biohacks You Can Do To Decrease Glucose Levels Cold and heat exposure work in different ways. Both will lower glucose over time. Cold therapy will stimulate brown fat. When you're hot and sweating a lot, that might cause the glucose to be elevated during the sauna session, but it should lower glucose values overall later in the day. The benefits we get from exercising can be duplicated when we also are doing sauna therapy. In addition, berberine is the most beneficial supplement for lowering glucose values. Plus, apple cider vinegar will help lower glucose values. Try a little bit of vinegar with water before a meal. You can also drizzle it on a salad. [33:30] The Dawn Phenomenon: What You Can Do About It You're going to potentially see a little bit of a glucose bump in the early morning hours. For most people, that occurs between about 4 to 8 am. It’s your body’s natural alarm clock. For some people, when they first wake up, glucose levels are highest in the day. There is no evidence to suggest that this glucose bump is a bad thing. She did not feel free to be herself or think the way she wanted to think and express that fully. At the moment, Dr. Jensen was crying and crying. Earlier in the day, Dr. Jensen’s mother had read her journal. Sadly, Dr. Jensen started to recognize that nothing was hers. Her mind, her body, and her thoughts were not hers. Jensen found a safety pin and carved “I hate life” into her arm. All of a sudden, something shifted; Dr. Jensen realized that she didn’t need to be a victim. If we don't fit into the tribe that we're moving into, it will be really hard to survive. The brain and the body are so smart that they're going to mold themselves to fit in. Our womb and our uterus is a space that's supposed to be for creativity, for abundance. However, with past trauma, our bodies can suffer. [12:30] The Reasons We Create Stories & How To Create Stories That Will Better Serve You There are different reasons why we create stories. We create a story in the womb to help us survive the environment we're going in. Stories are beautiful; they hold tradition and culture. Plus, stories can be amazing learning opportunities. Also, stories are influencing how we navigate our world, what we believe about ourselves, and the lens that we put on when we perceive the world around us. When we're trapped in the story that we've created to survive, we're not really connected to our own center and our own soul’s story. Yoga doesn't have to be buying a yoga mat and doing a yoga class. Instead, yoga could be connecting with nature, it could be cooking a meal, and feeling completely connected with yourself. Physical yoga creates these movements in our body that we don't normally do. Plus, it creates this awakening and certain nerve endings and connections between organs and our breath. It starts to repattern our brain to think differently. Often, we're stuck in our mind, and we're operating from our mind. However, yoga can bring you back to your heart. [21:45] The Most Common Symptom That Women Deal With On A Daily Basis The most common symptom that Dr. Jensen treats is anxiety. There's usually an event that's created that anxiety, there is perception, there's a belief, and then that turns into deficiencies in our hormones. When a woman has anxiety, her gut system is also not working as well. Women need to understand where the anxiety is coming from and that it's not who she is. When we're thriving off of that stress, the anxieties show up, the gut issues show up, the inability to be very intimate shows up. Also, there is never one answer for all of us. Lastly, healing is a journey, and we don't have to get there right away. Consistency is critical for overall sleep hygiene. [12:00] How Sleep Plays A Role In Your Weight Loss Journey If you’re not sleeping well, glucose levels are oscillating at a higher level. Hight glucose levels will make it more challenging to resist temptations throughout the day when we're running on that period of even acute sleep deprivation. When you throw off the time you go to sleep and the time you wake up, then you are throwing off your fasting windows and your feeding windows. When we start having inconsistent timing of when we're eating, then that can throw off a confusing series of triggers to the body. Also, we won’t be getting enough recovery time if we aren’t sleeping well. On John’s health journey, he explored vegetarian diets and vegan diets. In fact, he was vegan for almost seven years. One day, John found peace and realized that the only thing you need is to love. The health space is a great place to be right now because a lot of people are waking up to it finally. [12:00] How To Use A Foam Roller And Lacrosse Ball Properly Hamstrings usually get very tight. So, put the lacrosse ball on a hard chair under the most tender points of the hamstring, and let your muscles sink into it. As you sink into it the ball, you're basically pinning that trigger point. Also, you will be alleviating the calcium deposit. Sawing away at a foam roller is not the best approach. Instead, use the pin and shear method on your foam roller. Using a foam roller or lacrosse ball is better after a workout rather than before. [20:50] Why John Wanted To Write A Book About Covid Honestly, John didn’t want to write a book about Covid. However, the book is what we need because of Covid. When John says Rewilding Covid, it means taking your health into your own hands. Rewilding means tuning ourselves back into the wild aspect of what makes us a real human. Plus, it means that you're mimicking basically what our ancestors did naturally. For John, being wild means having freedom. Ideally, we will all wind up being in control of our spirit. “We are wild humans at heart.” -John Schott [31:40] The Power of Human Adaptability During Covid The one thing that we can control is how we interact with our environment and how we adapt. One of the most fascinating things about humans is our ability to adapt. As our environments change, we have to change with the environment. We need to help our body become more resilient, stronger, and better. Even if there is a virus in our environment, we know how to make changes and adapt. [38:55] What Is Grounding And Can It Improve Health? The beautiful thing about grounding is that it's free. We have generations and ancestral templates of being connected to the magnetic frequency of the Earth. The Earth has a pulse and a magnetic frequency that's anti-inflammatory, restorative, and rejuvenating. With grounding, your body can breathe, and your cells can breathe. For ten minutes each day, take your shoes off and put your feet on the bare ground. When grounding, you will feel less stress. [43:15] John Gives Tips On How You Can Become More Resilient Weave in movement throughout the day, as much as you can; it is very critical for overall health. John says that walking is very underrated. Going for long walks is extremely healthy, and it is restorative. Sometimes, what you need is more restoration. If you sit for long periods of time, stand up every thirty minutes and shake it out. Once that body starts feeling strong and good, it affects the way you think. When people have clogged limbs, and they're not able to detoxify properly. So, get moving! [45:20] The Importance of Proper Breathing For Overall Health Oxygen is life! Most of the time, people have cold hands and feet because they are not getting proper oxygen to the extremities. Sometimes, reproduction, libido, and the drive that we have for life will get challenged because of the lack of oxygenation. The way we breathe and what we're breathing is fundamental. As a personal trainer, Drew had never once been overweight a day in his life. However, Drew’s clients were overweight pretty much every day of their life. Unfortunately, Drew couldn't understand why it's so hard for them to follow the meal plans and do the workouts that he gave them. So, Drew went on a journey to gain a better understanding of what it was like to be overweight, and he put on 75 pounds in six months. Drew learned that he was totally wrong in his approach to helping people transform.   [10:05] Dealing With A Breakup Was The Hardest Part of Fit2Fat2Fit Drew and his girlfriend broke up during the Fit2Fat2Fit experiment. Many people ask if the breakup was because of this journey, and the honest truth is no. Sadly, they had problems before the journey even started. However, the problems were amplified because of Drew’s unhealthy physical state, which affected his emotional state. When you’re unhealthy, your ability to handle stress is severely diminished. Plus, you're more reactive, and you're in survival mode. Overall, unhealthy living causes a lot more issues in whatever relationship you're in, whether it’s romantic, friendships, or family. After the breakup, Drew was sad, lonely, and depressed. It was the hardest part of the journey for Drew.   [18:20] The Transition Back To ‘Fit’ After Gaining So Much Weight Drew made the transition back to being ‘fit’ cold turkey. He flipped the switch and went completely keto. Drew was excited, but he did not underestimate the power of withdrawal symptoms. Drew’s body would almost fight back against him with cravings to eat the processed food because he had trained it for so long to eat that. Thousands of people signed up to follow Drew on his journey, so that’s what motivated him to keep going. Community is a powerful tool on any journey of wellness.   [21:55] Physical Transformation Is Way More Emotional Than We Think The stresses of life don't go away when you're on a physical weight loss journey. If you're not prepared to deal with the emotional challenges that have been holding you back from living that healthy physical lifestyle, then transformation will not be manageable. You need new thought patterns so you can actually have success on the physical transformation side. If we can give people tools on the emotional side, then they will be able to handle physical transformations.   [26:00] The Importance of Becoming Comfortable In Uncomfortable Situations Here are some tools to help strengthen the mental side of your transformation: Make your bed every single day. Take a cold shower for 60 seconds. Write a daily gratitude list. Say positive affirmations each day. These things can be uncomfortable for lots of people, but training your brain to become comfortable in these uncomfortable situations can carry over into eating healthy food. We can become comfortable in these uncomfortable situations. That way, the physical journey will be so much easier.   [29:05] The Reason That We Are More Than Our Bodies Many of us see our identity as our body image. During Fit2Fat2Fit, Drew was uncomfortable and didn’t feel like himself anymore. Sadly, he was going through an identity crisis. Think about your identity without your body – it’s a powerful tool to learn. Learn how to step outside of your body and realize that you have so much more to offer the world. We are more than our bodies – it’s time to break free of that cycle.   [34:50] Why Getting Healthier Will Cause You To Be Happier A healthier version of you is going to cause you to be happier. Also, a healthier version of you is going to make it easier for you to be more fulfilled. Instead of focusing on being skinnier and getting ripped, people should focus on being healthier. A critical piece of health is managing stress. These are some powerful stress management tools: Meditation Prayer Journaling Getting out in nature Being with family Being with loved ones Relationships Sleeping   [45:45] Finding A Healthy Alternative To Ben & Jerry’s Sadly, Drew hasn’t found a quality replacement for Ben & Jerry’s yet. However, there are some good keto ice creams out in the world. Drew doesn’t want to eat ice cream when stressed out; it’s a bad habit to form. Instead, eat ice cream with intention and enjoy it. Don’t do it to escape any situation or feeling. Always have a good intention when eating something. Self-awareness plays a big role in being able to control emotional eating.   [56:20] How To Move Out Of Complacency During A Physical Transformation The scale isn’t the best measurement of your health. Instead, think about other areas of your life that are improving. Ask yourself these questions: Are you getting stronger with your workouts? Are you building up your endurance? Are you fitting into your clothes better? Are you waking up with more energy? You don’t want to be on this journey just for the end results.
