Office Hours: Florida Coach Will Palmer On His Approach To Coaching, Reflections From Working With Parker Valby, Developing Talent

“The really great athletes – they all have a superpower. [It’s about] what makes them uniquely excellent and helping them understand what their superpower is and how they wave that sword around…You may not have laser vision, but you can fly. How do you use your ability to fly and max that out?”

In just two years, Will Palmer has overseen quite a bit of success for the Florida Gators distance program. In 2023, as the associate head coach for cross country and assistant track and field coach, Palmer led the Gators’ women to their highest national ranking since 2009, an SEC championship, and a second place finish at the NCAA East Regionals. In addition to all of that, he and his wife Samantha were the coaches behind Parker Valby's record-breaking dominance, guiding her to NCAA titles, collegiate records, and her first Olympic team.

Before arriving in Gainesville, Palmer made an impact at Alabama, helping the women's team to an SEC title and a podium finish at the NCAA Championships in 2022. His coaching career also includes stops at Georgetown, Western Kentucky, Iowa State, and Oklahoma, shaping some of the best distance programs in the country. So today we dive into the vision behind Florida's rise in cross country, what made Parker Valby's training and mindset so unique to be part of, his coaching philosophy, and what he's building in Gainesville – plus lessons from a career spent developing talent and much more.

If you've been enjoying these office hours episodes, shoot me a message with other coaches that you'd like to hear from. We've got interviews with Mike Smith, Diljeet Taylor, Ed Eyestone, Laurie Henes, Dave Smith, Alex Gibby, Mark Coogan, and other top coaches in our archives.

Ben Flanagan On Winning the NCAA 10,000m Title, His Mom, Trusting The Process

Ben Flanagan On Winning the NCAA 10,000m Title, His Mom, Trusting The Process

Ben Flanagan was one of the biggest surprises at the 2018 NCAA Championships with his win in the 10,000 meters. In his final race in a Michigan uniform, he unleashed a crazy kick to stun pre-race favorite Vincent Kiprop in the final 200 meters. Flanagan won by just .46 seconds in a career-best of 28:34.53 and became the first Michigan man to win the 10,000m title since 1989.  Flanagan went viral after he was caught on camera saying, "Where's My Mom? Where's My Mom?" immediately after crossing the finish line. He joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to take us through the months leading up to his race, the 24 hours in Eugene and why he ended up calling out for his mother. I wrote a short piece on Sports Illustrated on Flanagan's win from his mom's perspective. https://www.si.com/more-sports/2018/06/07/ben-flanagan-ncaa-outdoor-track-and-field-championships-10000m-video-mom-reaction Ben shares insight into coping with injuries, visualizing goals and how he came to believe that he could be the NCAA champion. We received a lot of listener questions on Instagram and many of them were answered on the show including: What's your favorite dish made by your mom? What's the first thing that he said to his mom? How has coach Kevin Sullivan contributed and impacted him as a runner? What's his favorite thing to do in Michigan? What were some of his high school times and what was his development like? What was he listening to before the 10,000 meters? What are his post-collegiate training plans? How was Taylor's the night after the race? James Lim Talks Competing On Survivor, Sprinting at Harvard

James Lim was born in Los Angeles but grew up in Seoul, South Korea. He returned to the U.S. at 16 years old and started sprinting at Andover Phillips Academy and was hooked on the sport. He attended Harvard, studied economics, walked onto the track team and served as a captain. While at Harvard, he convinced a friend to apply together for The Amazing Race. He was close to competing on that show but was asked by CBS to apply for Survivor's 36th season. James and I connected in New York City over lunch (so I could get some inside tips on how to get on the show) and then recorded a podcast in Union Square Park. On this show, we discuss: How he ended up on Fiji competing on Survivor: Ghost Island What is it like for a runner to compete on the show? Would Ashton Eaton be the best competitor on that show? How closely does he follow the sport of track and field and who impresses him the most? What tips would he have for me to win the show? How does he convince someone to watch Survivor and what makes more than just a reality TV show? Where does someone go to the bathroom when they're being filmed and stranded on an island? And much more... You can catch the latest episode of the podcast on iTunes so subscribe and leave a five-star review. We are also now on Stitcher and now Google Play! ---------- This episode was brought to you by Maurten. Fuel properly for long distance races! we recommend Maurten.
