Mason Marchment in his second season with the Dallas Stars is en route to a career year. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey highlights the offensive numbers for Marchment and how they stack up against others on the Stars high powered offense. He's currently top five in points and ranks among the top in Expected Goals and Goals Per 60 while also being a physical presence. Not only is he on pace to break career highs in goals, assists and points, but he's drawn the most penalty minutes on the team by quite a margin. Like Tyler Seguin, he has certainly reaped the benefits of the Matt Duchene signing. The next topic revolves around tonight's game versus the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs are very top heavy, but with players like Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar you can win a lot of games. This matchup is a huge test for the Stars at home coming off a game they should have been able to win if they did not surrender a three goal lead after scoring 11 seconds into the game. The final segment is another update on Jake Oettinger, who left his last start with a lower body injury on December 15. Head Coach Pete DeBoar changed the status from week-to-week, to day-to-day and stated that he is getting better every day. He has begun skating and doing more which is a great sign since Scott Wedgewood is going to make his 9th straight start. Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson score with the extra attacker late as the Stars made a late push but fall to the Montreal Canadiens 4-3. The Canadiens best players, Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky all had big nights to help Montreal snap a three game losing skid. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, the main takeaway from the loss it multi goal deficits. The Stars have been in that position too many times this season, in a game they should have won and we're clearly the better team they are unable to get points. Joey applauds the effort to even make it a one goal game, but at some point those deficits will catch up to you. Special teams was the deciding factor in the game, Caufiled's tally on the man advantage was the game winner and at the time extended the Canadiens lead to 4-1. The Stars had a chance to tie the game at two in the 2nd period, but came up empty in a key situation that has happened all too often. The final segment was the player of the game, Wyatt Johnston finally scored a goal after 16 games without one and picked up an assist on Jamie Benn's goal 11 seconds into the game. Wyatt Johnston has gone 16 straight games without a goal, and just had four assists in the month of December. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey answers the burning question how can the Stars get Wyatt Johnston to produce again? Johnston has not played bad by any means, some would say he has been unlucky with some of the chances he's had to score lately. Joey thinks the Stars need to think about breaking up his line involving Jamie Benn and Evgenii Dadanov. The trio has scored 8 goals at five on five this season, just 3 ahead of the fourth line which does not have the same amount of fire power, plus they rank as one of the worst lines in all of hockey in Goals per 60 minutes. Joey believes adding someone like Sam Steel to join Benn and Johnston could help them be more effective, since the whole line has not been as effective since December. We have more news on Jake Oettinger who is now skating, but Pete DeBoer said he is farther away then closer. Joey speculates the possible return for Otter and why they are going to be extra cautious in the next few weeks.
