Dallas Stars FLOP in Shutout Loss to Jets 4-0: Pete DeBoer and the Offense must ADJUST for Game 3!

The Dallas Stars come out of the All-Star break on the road against the Buffalo Sabres tonight. However, General Manager Jim Nill did a Q&A with Mike Heika and he spoke about the trade deadline and more. He was asked about how aggressive the Stars might be and if he believes the need another defensemen. Joey for the most part agrees with the answers Nill gave and understands he will not be 100% transparent about their plans because at the end of the day it's about leverage to make deals. The more concerning answer was that the next month will determine if the Stars need a defender. The last four months should determine that the Stars need one, not the next month. Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley can only do so much and with them playing together, that can leave holes in other pairings. It's very clear where the Stars struggle and need to address issues to make it to a Stanley Cup Final. Something Dallas does not struggle with is offense. The second segment documents the Stars incredible offense this season, but they do not generate many power plays because of it. For a team that maintains possession and spends a lot of time generating chances and scoring the majority of the them, Dallas is fourth to last in power play opportunities this season. It's hard to give a clear cut answer why, but if the Stars can do more to get more power plays, it adds another layer of an already lethal offense. The final segment we preview tonight's game with the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo did not make the next step many thought they would and find themselves 6th in the Atlantic Division. The Dallas Stars return from All-Star break and face the Buffalo Sabers tomorrow night. Jake Oettinger returns as the lone representative for the Stars this season and also returns on the winning team, Team Matthews! Oettinger also stopped 8 out of 10 shots in the Skills Competition against Eilias Pettersson. Joey begins the episode taking a look into Otter's change in routine after having ankle surgery in July. He's had to practice less on the ice and do more off the ice like video work. Joey thinks this may has led to some of his inconsistencies in his play this season and once it becomes more comfortable his play and numbers will return to what we've seen in previous seasons. The 2nd segment is a preview of the February schedule for the Dallas Stars. The Stars play a total of 13 games against nine teams in the playoff picture and three back to backs. They take on top teams such as Carolina twice, Boston, New York and two division opponents in Colorado and Winnipeg. This will be a very important stretch for the Stars who want to win the Central Division and a trade deadline that looms in a month. The All-Star break came at a good time for the Stars, but they have to beat quality opponents to keep pace in with the Avalanche and Jets. Matt Duchene is having a phenomenal season with the Dallas Stars and is one of the best values in the entire NHL. Having 45 points in 48 games at 33 years old is going to catch the attention of teams for the pending Free Agent after the season. Joey gives what his "pitch" would be to keep Duchene and how the 1,000 game celebration last Saturday can go a long way for someone that has three young kids and looking for something more stable at this point in his career. The Stars are not only ready to win now, but in the future and he is not required to carry the heavy load of being the "guy" on the team. Of course you want him to stay, but the Stars are going to have to pay Thomas Harley, Sam Steel of Ty Dellandrea. The Stars may have to move off of one or two in order to get a deal done with Duchene, or is he willing to take less like he did this past offseason to remain in Dallas. Time will tell, but his impact has already been immense. The next segment, we look at the Western Conference playoff series if the season ended today. The Stars are the two seed in the Central Division and would host the Winnipeg Jets in the first round. The burning question of today's episode of Locked On Stars is are the Dallas Stars frauds?? The Stars are off to a phenomenal start this season, heading into the All-Star Break they have 66 points through 49 games and find themselves fifth in the NHL. They have the 3rd best offense scoring 6.68 goals per game and flex that in the majority of their wins this season, but their are underlying issues. The Stars are one of three teams ranked in the top 10 in points this season, out of the top 10 in goals against per game and save percentage, usually categories Stanley Cup teams are very good in. Jake Oettinger has certainly not played his best hockey and if finds his rhythm the Stars will be very dangerous. Joey explains his reasoning behind the question and why might some people lean one side of the aisle versus the other. What is your answer to the question? The conversation then switches to the dominance of Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley. Harley has 12 goals this season after two on Saturday including his 3rd OT winner of the season, and Heiskanen has three points in his first two games back from injury. The Dallas Stars win a thrilling overtime game at home over the Anaheim Ducks by a final score of 4-3. Miro Heiskanen scores the game tying goal in his return and leads all Stars with 25:33 minutes of TOI. Thomas Harley picks up an assist and score the game winner in OT with his 10th goal of the season. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, we celebrate the fact that Miro and Harley are playing on the same pairing. This is quickly becoming one of the best pairings in all of hockey and you could see why last night. Miro was rusty after 3 weeks off, but was really active in the game and did not miss a beat, Harley continues to impress and made plays all over the rink. Having Nils Lundkvist back in the lineup allows for more versatility on the defensive pairings for Head Coach Pete DeBoer and allows Harley and Heiskanen to play together. All of that leads to good things for the Dallas Stars. However, the Stars had some sloppy moments that cost them in the game. We try to answer at points this season why the Stars do not look connected as a team. When the game becomes chaotic and out of structure, the Stars really seem to struggle and therefore surrender more opportunities. It's important for the Stars to have good puck management and not allow the game to get away from the style they would like to play to be successful. The final segment revolves around Jake Oettinger, Joey states he is not worries about Oettinger come playoff time because he has shown he can elevate his play in the biggest moments. He also realizes that Otter's numbers have slipped this season and from his perspective not as comfortable in the crease. Roope Hintz is having another spectacular season for the Dallas Stars and is the most underrated player in the NHL. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey explains why Hintz is so impactful for the Stars and why he maybe gets forgotten about playing along Jason Robertson and Matt Duchene's immediate impact. A complete 200 foot player that thrives in his own zone just as much as he does offensively, at some point he will crack the top 10 in Selke voting. With all the shake ups in the lines this season or even in years past, one thing stays the same, Hintz is the top line center. He drives the line with his speed and makes his line-mates better. The next segment revolves around the Anaheim Ducks, Miro Heiskanen scored twice in the matchup which was the 3rd game of the season for the Stars. Heiskanen may return after not playing since Jan. 4th, but the Stars should have no trouble with a team that ranks one of the worst in the league this season. Finally, the podcast finishes off with an update on the Texas Stars. The month of January has been one to forget so far, the Stars have only won one game and on a six game losing streak leading into last night's game.
