200: Episode 200, WOW!: Penises, Podcasts & Personal Growth – Melissa Reflects

200: Episode 200, WOW!: Penises, Podcasts & Personal Growth – Melissa Reflects

In this milestone 200th episode, the tables are turned as Dr Amy Pearlman interviews The Penis Project's own Melissa Hadley Barrett. From wet hair and time zone mix-ups to powerful patient stories and favourite sex toys, this episode is a heartwarming, hilarious, and deeply honest look into what Melissa has learned after 200 interviews about penises, pleasure, relationships, and recovery.

Amy has been a popular guest on The Penis Project and a friend and colleague to Melissa over the past few years and for something different the tables have turned, and Amy is interviewing Melissa to see what she has learnt being a part of The Penis Project community for 200 episodes and just under 5 years of posting. On the 14th of September the Penis Project will have been live for 5 years. This may not seem like a long time for most people but for Melissa it has been huge. Keeping the interviews coming and arranging editing and show notes etc. whilst running a busy growing practice has been hard but worth it, and she has learnt way more from her patients and interviewees than she thought possible.

Together, Melissa and Amy explore:

  • How a podcast that began during COVID lockdowns with Melissa and Dr Jo Milios (Physiotherapist) and then without realising became a global resource for men’s health
  • Why it’s time to stop joking about penises and start listening
  • The emotional side of male sexuality and how assumptions miss the mark
  • What men really want after prostate cancer (hint: it isn’t just erections)
  • How patients have reshaped Melissa’s clinical approach over time
  • Products that have changed lives—and a few that scared her husband
  • New conversations about sounding, Tantra, and intimacy beyond intercourse
  • What Melissa hopes to do with the next 200 episodes—and who she dreams she will interview next and her dream to be interviewed by….

In This Episode, We Cover:

  • How the podcast began as a way to help patients and became so much more
  • Learning from patients about loss, masculinity, and connection
  • Rethinking the urgency of "getting it up" and embracing broader definitions of intimacy
  • The importance of not making assumptions as clinicians
  • Sex toys and tools Melissa now recommends—and the ones she avoids
  • What a Tantra workshop has taught her about relationships
  • Sounding: safety, stigma, and why we need to talk about it
  • The power of podcasts to create change and community connection

Key Takeaways:

  • Empathy, humour and curiosity matter more than bravado
  • Real stories help others feel seen, supported, and less alone
  • Sexual health is about connection, not just erections
  • There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but there is always a way forward

Expert Insight from Melissa Hadley Barrett: "My goal is to open up the conversation. Whether it’s about erectile dysfunction, sex after cancer, or pleasure in new ways. Men and their partners deserve honest support and practical options. This podcast has become my passion project, and it’s changed how I practice. Most of all I want to thank the people who have let us interview them for sharing stories and teaching me so much I could never have learnt from a book or another health professional. I hope my patients and listeners realise how important they are to me, my growth as a human and as a health professional."

77. How Prostate Cancer Liberated Picasso to Explore Sexual Creativity

(A refreshing look into Prostate Cancer Journey )   For today’s episode, we will be talking with Picasso.   Picasso was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at 59 years old. His history involves up and down PSA levels. One day, his new GP, after looking at his records, advised him to go and see a specialist. After an MRI and a biopsy, Picasso had to undergo assisted robotic prostatectomy – amidst the early stages of the pandemic.    After surgery, Picasso had great results when it came to his continence (he did not even need to wear pads) and sexual function.    So now, two years after the surgery and already 61, Picasso has learned and started to get to know his penis in a different level. According to him, after the surgery, the way he was learning about his sexuality has been liberating. Coming from a religious background, Picasso has this limited core belief around sex... all this changed afterward.    And IF you’re curious to know what were the steps Picasso took to have these great results, have a listen! Spoiler alert – he did early Physio, Pilates, Yoga, and mindfulness. Plus penis vitamins after the surgery. 😉    Enjoy listening! If you are interested in doing Yoga or Pilates, send us a message and we’ll try our best to refer you to one.     ----- If you feel The Penis Project is valuable to you then, please review and subscribe as this will ensure more people get to hear what we have to say. ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

76. Meet Glen Poole - CEO of the Australian Men’s Health Forum (AMHF)

In today’s podcast, we speak to Glenn Poole, CEO of the Australian Men’s Health Forum (AMHF), the peak body for men’s health in Australia.   With the aim of improving male health across the lifespan, AMHF explores the how and why of male attitudes to health and how this may impact their quality & quantity of life. Linking up with a diverse network of individuals and organisations that work together, AMHF provides a central point for improved outcomes and the sharing of knowledge and programs across Australia.   Glenn joins Melissa & Dr Jo as they tackle some of the tricky topics that can affect boys and men. This includes addressing the physical, social, spiritual, sexual, and relationship needs of males across the lifespan - from school to retirement and beyond. It is a little-known fact that men have a 4-5 year reduced lifespan vs females and are at higher risk for many diseases and poorer health in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and suicide.   Research shows that the best way to improve men’s health is to tackle the underlying social factors like education, fatherhood, work-life, social connection and access to male-friendly services and Glenn discusses how he puts this into practice.   For more information about AMHF, you can gain an info kit from www.amhf.org.au. A yearly National Men’s Health awards event is the highlight of the AMHF calendar, so look out for it every June in Men’s Health Week.   A big thanks to Glenn and his team for all their incredible support of men’s health.   ----   ROADSHOW DETAILS, please click here >>   ----- If you feel The Penis Project is valuable to you then, please review and subscribe as this will ensure more people get to hear what we have to say. ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

74. Meet Peri-pain Pete. Let’s talk about pain in the perineum.

74. Meet Peri-pain Pete. Let’s talk about pain in the perineum.

Today, we speak with Peri-pain Pete.   Pete is a 72-year old retired geologist who experienced pain in his perineum following prostate removal. Being a retiree who loves to cycle and is quite active sports wise, the peri-pain did affect his life.   When did the pain start? According to Pete, it was when his catheter came out that he noticed the pain. The pain is exacerbated by standing but is relieved when sitting or lying down. After much research, Pete didn't find any explanation as to the cause.   So... this episode will help us navigate through 'Peri-pain' and see what Pete did to resolve the issue. Then, Dr Jo will discuss a few possible causes of the pain plus a simple anatomy lesson. Melissa will also add information about medications and assessments. And lastly, this might be the first episode where Dr Jo teaches how to ‘subtlety’ do nuts-to-guts.   It's an interesting episode again this week! We hope the golden nut-gets from today's episode will help those experiencing the same pain as Pete had.  Have fun listening!  ------ If you feel The Penis Project is valuable to you then, please review and subscribe as this will ensure more people get to hear what we have to say. ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi
