Virtual Best Practices For Eating Disorders

Jessica-Lauren Newby, MA, RDN, LD, CEDRD-S, IBCLC

Many ED professionals use blind weights, as Jessica-Lauren talks about, to protect people from the emotional roller coaster of completely normal weight changes from morning to night. (BIA = bioimpedance analysis.)
  • People in all “corners” of the state can receive care virtually – more people can get service.
  • A benefit of virtual work for the provider is to ‘see their space’
  • A benefit of virtual work for the client/patient –“ I don’t have to go to the doctor every week!”
  • A nugget for your virtual work as a professional is being willing to watch listen and hold space and less of the talking.
Nutrition Focused Physical Exam – rely on medical provider Jessica-Lauren sends a packet of information for primary care medical providers if they don’t have ED-specific training. BIA - It’s not physiologically possible to control fat vs muscle changes. “Yes, my weight has changed, but I’m going out with my friends and laughing again or it’s easier to complete projects because my brain is back online.” Numberless virtual scales Best Practices: •For highly invested clients who are committed to the process
•For parents of adolescents who might not be in a good place.
•If numbers change drastically, use a non-accusatory approach. Has the scale been moved? Floors aren’t level? Might need recalibration so reach out to tech support who will contact the client/patient
•Weigh first thing in the morning at approximately the same time (body weight can change drastically from morning to night in all people)
•Voiding prior to stepping on the scale
 •Wearing similar clothing
 •Barefoot for BIA
•Changes in hydration are more of the reason for looking at BIA numbers in the portal.
•What does it tell us if the client stands on a numberless scale multiple times a day?
