Animals and Pets

In this episode of the Way Beyond Words Podcast, hosts Peter Ryan and Able Zee delve into the fascinating world of animals and pets. They offer a fresh perspective on how animals experience their surroundings, shedding light on their unique abilities and consciousness.

The hosts kick off the episode by exploring the behavior of squirrels in populated areas. They marvel at how these furry creatures seem to be acutely aware of their environment, often stopping to observe people as they go about their day. Through this observation, Peter and Abel highlight the interconnectedness between animals and their surroundings.

The rise of video platforms like TikTok has provided us with the opportunity to witness animals in their natural habitats. This has allowed us to tap into their incredible intelligence and awareness of their situations. Peter and Abel explain that animals, just like humans, are deeply integrated into their environments. By observing them without interfering, we gain a deeper understanding of their experiences.

Eugene Gendlin believed that focusing requires language abilities, leading to the assumption that animals cannot focus as they lack language. However, Abel counters this argument by asserting that animals engage in felt sensing, a form of experiencing their surroundings without the need for language. Animals rely on their highly developed sensory abilities to interact with their environments, learning and adapting based on past experiences.

The hosts use the example of fish sensing changes in a river due to flooding. Fish can detect variations in temperature, current, depth, and sediment without labeling them conceptually. They carry forward their past experiences, allowing them to adapt and survive. This showcases the animals' ability to learn and navigate their surroundings without relying on abstract concepts.

In contrast to humans, animals are more immersed in their environments and do not abstract themselves as much. Their experience of a situation involves their entire body, a concept that may be difficult for humans to comprehend given our different sensory abilities.

As the episode concludes, Peter and Abel urge listeners to closely observe animals like squirrels and attempt to empathize with their perspective. By considering an animal's experience, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the intricate and immersive ways in which they interact with their surroundings.
