114. The Fourth Trimester

"I felt broken. Physically. Emotionally. I had a complete breakdown. I felt like a broken human. I was so tired. Lifeless. And I finally Googled the one thing I hadn't really wanted to Google."

In just a few days, Annie — my spankin' new daughter — will be three months old. That means I will have reached the end of what is commonly referred to as "the fourth trimester." That period postpartum when the baby still thinks its in the womb, and the mom is — I'm not sure what the mom is. But I know that for me, this fourth trimester has been tough. Trying. Exhausting. Emotional. Wonderful, amazing, monumental — but definitely hard. So on this solo episode, I talk about all of it: the pumping, the boob stuff, the expectations, the realities, and the truths. I talk about why I've been living in fear, and open up about what went down over the holidays, and how it ended with me Googling and really looking into postpartum depression. Plus, I talk about having help — thank god for help! — and answer listener questions.

"I got to the top and I was like, 'Wow.' Like so proud of myself. I have no idea how much I weigh relative to then. I do not care to see the difference in a photo between what I look like then and what I look like now. All I know is that I'm so happy with myself, I'm so proud of myself, and I feel so strong." Camila Ramón started running in elementary school. Not because she loved it. Not because it made her feel good. Not because she was on the track or cross-country teams. Camila started running at a young age because she thought she needed to lose weight. In this conversation, Camila talks about the pressure she felt and the comments she received about her body while growing up in Argentina, and later in Miami. She talks about how, as an adult and professional dancer, she rediscovered running, and this time it stuck. She found a community of like-minded runners, she started trail running in L.A., and she completed her first marathon (and earned a Boston Marathon qualifying time, which meant she then ran the 2019 Boston Marathon as her second marathon). "What I would want to tell that person, but I think would have destroyed that person is, 'You're going to get everything you ever wanted, and it's going to destroy you.'" In 2020, Molly Seidel finished second at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, earning herself a spot on Team USA for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She had no idea what was to come. When the Olympics finally happened, in August 2021, Molly had the race of her life. She finished third, taking a bronze medal back to the U.S. — the first American woman to medal in the Olympic marathon since Deena Kastor in 2004. Then, it was a whirlwind of media, requests, appearances, and fanfare. Molly finished fourth at the 2021 New York City Marathon, breaking Kara Goucher's American course record in the process. All the while, though, behind the smiles at events and during interviews, Molly was struggling with an eating disorder and with her mental health. She went on to drop out of the 2022 Boston Marathon, and to give up her spot on the 2022 World Championships marathon team. "My why is bigger than myself. My why is for all the people I'm racing for and raising funds for. My why is for all the angels on my angel list. And my why is for everyone that's been told they can't do something. Because who says you can't?" Last month, professional runner Keira D'Amato hosted a week's worth of giveaways on Instagram. "I remember telling my friend that my goal in life is to be able to make everyone happy, and to be everything that everyone needs. And he was like, 'That sounds exhausting and impossible.' And I was like, 'Watch me! I can do it! I will bring joy to the masses!' And now, a year later, I'm like, 'What was I thinking? That DOES sound exhausting!'" Happy New Year! I kick off the start of every year here on the Ali on the Run Show with my annual review, of sorts. I call it the State of the Ali on the Run Show. It gives me a chance to reflect on the previous year, and set goals and intentions for the one ahead. By the numbers: In 2022, I released 135 episodes of the Ali on the Run Show, plus an additional eight episodes on Patreon, with 114 different guests. I hosted nine live shows — eight in person, one virtual — and partnered with 15 different brands and companies.
