Jon Kabat-Zinn – Attitudes of Mindfulness (Part 1).

Jon Kabat-Zinn – Attitudes of Mindfulness (Part 1).

In this three-part series, the Moonshots Podcast takes a deep dive into the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, the creator of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). This foundational framework—The 7 Attitudes of Mindfulness—offers practical, timeless guidance for living with greater awareness, clarity, and emotional intelligence.

Whether you're seeking more presence in your personal life, resilience in your work, or deeper insight into yourself, this series explores how to build those capacities through the simple, yet powerful principles of mindfulness.

Episode 280 – Part 1: Beginner’s Mind, Non-Judging, and Acceptance

In the first episode of the series, Mike and Mark unpack the first three attitudes in Jon Kabat-Zinn’s model. These core concepts help shape how we relate to ourselves, others, and the present moment.

1. Beginner’s Mind (Clip: 2m08)
Kabat-Zinn encourages us to approach each moment as if it were new, free from assumptions and past experiences. The idea is to cultivate a fresh, curious perspective—even toward familiar situations. This mindset opens the door to deeper learning, more meaningful relationships, and renewed appreciation for the everyday.

Key insight: When we let go of the belief that we already know, we create space for true discovery.

2. Non-Judging (Clip: 3m35)
Modern life trains us to evaluate everything constantly—our performance, thoughts, feelings, and the world around us. Kabat-Zinn teaches that non-judging is the practice of noticing these thoughts without getting caught up in them. It’s not about suppressing judgment but becoming aware of its automatic nature and choosing not to engage with it.

Key insight: By observing our thoughts without attaching labels, we create the mental freedom to respond instead of react.

3. Acceptance (Clip: 2m46)
Acceptance is often misunderstood as passivity. Kabat-Zinn reframes it as an active engagement with reality. Instead of resisting what is happening, we learn to meet it fully. This doesn’t mean we approve of everything—it means we begin with clarity and honesty, which is the first step toward meaningful change.

Key insight: Acceptance allows us to stop fighting reality and start responding to it with intention.

Why These Attitudes Matter

Beginner’s mind, non-judging, and acceptance form the bedrock of a mindful life. Practiced together, they help reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and improve emotional regulation. These are not abstract ideas—they are habits of attention and perception that anyone can develop.

This episode offers real-world reflections and actionable takeaways to begin integrating mindfulness into your daily routine.

Sir Isaac Newton: Never Give Up

Sir Isaac Newton: Never Give Up

Sir Isaac Newton was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, alchemist, theologian, and author, widely recognized as one of the greatest mathematicians and physicists of all time and among the most influential scientists. He was a key figure in the philosophical revolution known as the Enlightenment. His start in life was fraught with illness and according to his mother, at birth, he could have fit inside a quart mug. He was born especially tiny but grew into a massive intellect that still looms large."My powers are ordinary. Only my application brings me success." Isaac Newtown by James Gleick Thanks to our monthly supporters Mike Edwin Deitch Jamie Dorward Emily Rose Banks Malcolm Magee Natalie Ryan N. Shawn Achor: The Happiness Advantage

Shawn Achor: The Happiness Advantage

The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor shows us how to rewire our brains for positivity and optimism to reap the happiness advantage in our lives, our careers, and even our health. How small shifts in our mind-set and habits can produce big gains at work, at home, and elsewhere. Happiness is not the belief that we don't need to change; it is the realization that we can. Our most commonly held formula for success is broken. Conventional wisdom holds that once we succeed, we'll be happy; that once we get that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But the science reveals this formula to be backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around.Habits are like financial capital – forming one today is an investment that will automatically give out returns for years to come.― Shawn Achor Thanks to our monthly supporters Mike Edwin Deitch Jamie Dorward Emily Rose Banks Malcolm Magee Natalie Ryan N. Albert Einstein: Problem Solving

Albert Einstein: Problem Solving

To whet your appetite for the upcoming Isaac Newton show we wanted to reshare one of the great problem solvers, Albert Einstein - enjoy! A lot of people think that Albert Einstein’s greatest ability was his mathematical mind, but Einstein’s greatest skill was the ability to sift the essential from the inessential — to grasp simplicity when everyone else was lost in the clutter. Problems are an integral part of everyday life. So is problem-solving. But where people differ is in their ability to solve problems. Problem-solving has a synonym today, especially in the corporate world — fire fighting. Up to 70% of employees’ time is spent ‘fire fighting’. They spend more than six hours a day grappling with problems that should not exist. Imagine what organizations can achieve if hundreds or thousands of employees get these hours daily to work on something constructive! Some problems should be solved. Some problems should be left alone. Some problems should not exist at all. Thanks to our monthly supporters Mike Edwin Deitch Jamie Dorward Emily Rose Banks Malcolm Magee Natalie Ryan N.
