We Choose Our Responses & They Define Our Lived Experience w/ Yale Director of Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett

“Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” This is the quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E Frankl that headlines a new book titled, Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want. The book comes from my guest in this episode, Marc Brackett. Mark is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. Marcs research for over 25 years has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. The quote from Viktor Frankl that came from his time in a concentration camp, and that Marc has devoted his life to, is saying that no matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. And my experience of humanity is that no matter what happens to them, even great traumas, tragedies, and victimizations, what harms them more than the incident or event is how they conceive of it and how they respond. My concern is that culturally we have come into a place where we don’t believe this. We feel it is our right and it’s just, to respond to pain, with pain. And to say otherwise is actually offensive. Looking at the mental health stats these days, I don’t think this perspective is working. This is the conversation you’re about to hear with Marc Brackett. Marc previously authored the bestselling book, Permission To Feel and most recently, along with Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann, Marc and his team co-created the Apple award-winning app, HowWeFeel, that was designed to teach emotion skills and enhance well-being. 587: John O’Leary on not living accidentally

We are discussing, not letting time and life just slip by. We bring back John O’Leary, the author of the NY Times bestselling book ON FIRE: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life, and host of Live Inspired Podcast – a top iTunes & Inc. Magazine, business podcast – and highly sought-after speaker. John was badly burnt on 100% of his body and should have died. Today he says if he could go back, he’d let it all happen as it did. In this show we got to talking about many of us...maybe most...being at a handicap because we HAVEN’T had a significant tragedy happen to us that keeps us from taking life and time for granted. We fall into inactivity and what John has coined “accidental living”. It’s a very convicting discussion folks. Sometimes we want to discount someone who we think had a benefit we didn’t. Well, having a gas can blow you up as a kid, JOhn feels may just be that...a benefit. The point is not to go blow yourself up. It’s to realize that you may be allowing comfort and ease to steal your glory. Which begs the question of...what to do about it. Well, listen in the the show and hear what John has to say. John is also inviting Ziglar listeners to his new LIVE INSPIRED, IN STUDIO, with John O’Leary –an online community of like-minded-friends who do life together + get inspired with John via LIVE webcast once a month. 586: Hope is the greatest motivation

586: Hope is the greatest motivation

We are talking about motivation. Without adequate motivation, we do nothing. Literally, we’d never get out of bed. The only reason we do anything at all is due to motive. So what will increase our motives? In this show today we hear a 1.5 min message from Zig Ziglar on what he believes to be the number one source of motivation - hope. Now you can hope for any number of things, but the key is not those things, but the hope itself - the reality of you actually expecting something to be possible and come to pass. The danger of course is when you DON’T actually have hope. We have an ever increasing amount of depression and even suicide in our culture today. I’m not a doctor or psychiatrist folks, admittedly. But I’m a student of humans and their behavior and I’ll wager there is little depression or suicide when there is actual hope. So this message is a big one. Now from Zig’s message, I posted on Facebook this question, “What are you looking forward to, right now, that is a daily motivation?” you can join in these weekly discussions by friending me on Facebook, find me at agentkmiller. Of course we received great feedback and I talked through it with my frequent co-host, Michelle Prince. I’m sure you will resonate with much that was shared.  Learn more about your ad choices. 584: Price vs Cost - sell your lifetime value

584: Price vs Cost - sell your lifetime value

If you have a product, service or message you believe is worth more than just the lowest price, you will want to hear this message. We have a message from Zig Ziglar about the difference in price vs cost. From it I posted our weekly facebook question at my agentkmiller facebook page where I invite you to join in. The question was “For those of you involved in providing a premium product or service (meaning, not just selling on the cheapest price), how do you sell the higher cost value?” I had Michelle Prince join me to talk through the comments, as she spends so much of her time helping authors differentiate their books and offer them in a compelling way. We got many great replies of course, so join us to hear them.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

583: Larry North - follow your own rules

583: Larry North - follow your own rules

Sometimes we go into business for ourselves because we have a unique product or service we want to bring to market. Sometimes we just find immense difficulty in working for others. In either case, we find ourselves in a place were we get to, or must…make up the rules. That’s much of our focus in today’s show.Larry North is a TX boy and a fan and friend of Ziglar who has spoken at Ziglar HQ multiple times. Larry started his first business at age 20, and it’s not a simple story, which is just the kind we love to hear most. Larry was told he’d never be able to land a top career position, and that his personality was unmanageable. So as you heard in the intro, he realized to have a great career he’d have to own his own business and follow his own rules.  Larry had a vision and faith, but no tangible resources. But he started the first of what became many health clubs. He also had a media career started shortly after that by arriving on talk radio where he performed for over 25 years. Shortly after that his best selling infomercial became one of the most popular weight loss infomercials ever. Three books, a chain of health clubs, and thousands of TV appearances and live presentations here and abroad have turned Larry North into a household name in fitness, weight loss, and health. He continues to spread his motivational messages and wisdom to dozens of fortune 500 companies and just about anyone who will listen. We had a great conversation on some nitty gritty issues regarding his personal progress. I found it really interesting that he’s in the health club business, he spends most of his time around people trying to make some of the hardest progress there is...with our bodies. Losing weight and gaining muscle take commitment. There’s probably not a more volatile industry out there. A constant stream of successes and failures. You’ll get much from this. 581: Ken Blanchard & Claire Diaz-Ortiz - Habits

581: Ken Blanchard & Claire Diaz-Ortiz - Habits

We’re back with our duo of Ken Blanchard and Claire Diaz-Ortiz, our guest from show 579 where we talked about mentoring. This is our habits show and it made for an interesting walk through the 7 spokes on the ziglar wheel of life as we discussed the habits of both Ken and Claire. Ken is a grandparent, Claire is a young mom. He comes from Zig’s generation, Claire is from the technology world. Few people don’t know Ken Blanchard, he needs little introduction as the renowned author of the acclaimed One Minute Manager book, and scores of others. Ken shared the stage with Zig Ziglar many times and is an influencer of Zig Ziglar’s generation and on Zig’s level. Now  Claire Diaz-Ortiz is an author, speaker and innovation advisor who was an early employee at Twitter. She was named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company and called “The Woman Who Got the Pope on Twitter” by Wired, how’s that for a claim! Clair  is the award-winning author of eight books that have been published in more than a dozen countries. But the cool story here is...Ken asked Claire to co-author a book with him: One Minute Mentoring - How to Find and Work With a Mentor - and Why You’ll Benefit from Being One.’ Ken asked Claire because he not only personally mentors her, but she in turn mentors him in regards to the younger generation. Get their book, Find the book, “One Minute Mentoring” wherever you buy books. Hey, if you’re hearing this show and haven’t Subscribed to us in ITunes, will you go hit the subscribe button? 580: Solving problems in your life

580: Solving problems in your life

We  hear a message from Zig Ziglar on direction. The power and necessity if you want to make progress, of determining the direction you want to go in your life. To have a vision and a game plan. From this message I asked this question on Facebook, “Where in your life do you have any specific goals in mind that you are working towards? 1) Physical, 2) Family, 3) Education, 4) Financial, 5) Spiritual, 6) Career, 7) Experiences, 8) Other”. Tom Ziglar and I talked through the responses, and Tom shared a paradigm shifting perspective on goals...in replacing that with “problems”. It was the first time I’d heard the concept and I think it will give new life to many of you as it did me, in looking at the things we desire to achieve or better in our lives.
