Shaykh Faid Mohammed Said commends SeekersHub on the initiative they have taken to make knowledge available and accessible globally. He reminds students of knowledge of the great importance and blessing of knowledge. In the Qur’an knowledge comes before faith. One must remember that learning is a journey. The journey of seeking knowledge has no end. Therefore, seeking knowledge requires extra effort everyday, and focus. Shaykh Faid goes on to remind the students of knowledge in order for one to be successful, one must be consistent and leave distractions. There is nothing better to busy one’s self with than seeking knowledge. He closes by counselling students that by putting in effort in seeking knowledge, facilitation and ease will come. He reminds everyone that it is a blessing to seek knowledge, and it is a blessing to serve those who are seeking knowledge as well. Sayyid al-Istighfar: The Foremost Way of Seeking Allah’s Forgiveness – Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
In this khutbah, Shaykh Faraz Rabbani reminds the believers that it is Allah who gives guidance. Out of His tremendous and unimaginable mercy, Allah has given us all kinds of means to seek and attain this guidance. One of those means is what Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) referred to as sayyid al-istighfar, meaning the foremost ways in seeking Allah’s forgiveness. This formula of asking Allah for forgiveness answers many key questions on Islamic belief. Who is Allah? What Allah’s relationship to creation? What does one owe Allah Most High? The sayyid al-isitghfar is a lesson in affirming Allah’s absolute oneness (tawheed), affirming who is your Lord. It also helps us to realize everything that one receives is ultimately from Allah and Him alone. Text, transliteration and translation of sayyid al-istighfar can be found below. اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لا إِلَهَ إِلا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَأَبُوءُ لَكَ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلا أَنْتَ Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa Anta Khalaqtani wa ana abduka, wa ana ‘ala ahdika wa wa’dika mastata’tu, A’udhu bika min Sharri ma sana’tu, abu’u Laka bini’matika ‘alaiya, wa Abu’u Laka bidhanbi faghfirli fainnahu la yaghfiru adhdhunuba illa anta O Allah, you are my Lord. There is no god but you. You have created me, and I am your servant—and I am upon Your covenant and promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the worst of what I have done. Reflection from the Qur’an: The Followed and their Admirers – Shaykh Faid Mohammed Said
Bismillah-ir Rahman-ir Raheem [And they should consider that] when those who have been followed disassociate themselves from those who followed [them], and they [all] see the punishment, and cut off from them are the ties [of relationship]. Those who followed will say, “If only we had another turn [at worldly life] so we could disassociate ourselves from them as they have disassociated themselves from us.” Thus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire. (Surah Al-Baqarah, 166-167) Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) described the Qur’an as a guide to the straight path; and the beauty of the Qur’an is that each ayah (verse) is beautiful and so much so that you cannot differentiate between the beauty of two ayahs! And the People of Qur’an, when they read and journey through the Qur’an, their skin shivers, as they learn, experience and become a part of something new each time they read and reflect on the Qur’an! In this world, people follow each other, look up to one another, enjoy the company of the other and follow their advice; hence there are two: the followed and their admirers. However, on the very Day that we will be made to account, people will be running away from one another, and those that were followed will disassociate themselves from their admirers; and the admirers will wish they had another chance to go back and disassociate themselves from the ones they had followed! Let this serve as a reminder to us all – let us not put ourselves in that position! The Believer’s Response to Trials and Tribulations: Reflections on the Quebec Shootings, A Year Later – Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
In this khutba Shaykh Faraz Rabbani reminds us that the believers are not distinguished by living a worldly life, rather a believer lives with a higher reality and sense of purpose. Understanding the events that take place in this world are not for one to simply indulge in with worldly emotions. Rather they are a trial to see how one will deal with the trials and tribulations of this world. He goes on to remind us that what makes a Muslim community is believing in Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessing be upon him). Shaykh Faraz goes on to explain how believers respond to trials. In trials and tribulations there is a tremendous wisdom from Allah Most High. What Allah wants from believers during trials is to continue to turn to Him with a sense of need. He ends by explaining how the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) was constantly tried and tested, however he never complained. The Company We Keep – Shaykh Faid Mohammed Said
Bismillah-ir Rahman-ir Raheem Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasalam) said to Syedina Abu Dharr (radiallah anhu): “Loneliness is better than bad company, and good company is better than being alone; to speak good is better than being quiet, and to keep quiet is better than saying words of regret!” People might blame you for not being social, or for not being around them, but what really matters is our choice of company, as company is infectious – so choose with whom to be! As Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasalam) said: “The example of good company is like being in a perfumery, either remnants of the perfume remain on you or you will carry the perfume in your hands; and the example of bad company is like visiting the establishment of the blacksmith, where you will either be affected by the smoke or you will carry the scent of it!” And Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasalam) said: “Everyone will be resurrected with his or her friend, – so choose who you will be with!” …And as far as you remember Him, you are never alone!
