25. Why dentistry needs more deaf providers + helpful changes YOU can make to assist! with Amanda Zubricki @that.deaf.girl

Do you know that there are specific ways we can accomodate someone who is hard of hearing or deaf in the dental clinic? Tune in to this great episode which is the very first Talk Dental to Me episode that has a fully transcribed video on Youtube - search 'Emma Talks Teeth'. Growing up profoundly deaf was a unique experience for Amanda and she experienced many hurdles and even pushback from college educators about her career decision. Amanda has proven that being profoundly deaf is not a hindrance and is an exceptional advocate for the deaf and hard of hearing community. HIGHLIGHTS: - As a provider, what QUESTIONS should we ask a deaf patient to accommodate them during an appointment? - How can CE providers, dental professionals and dental schools who provide education make their webinars ACCESSIBLE? - Should a dental professional learn basic dental ASL for a deaf or hard of hearing patient? - UNPACKING HEARING LOSS MYTHS: hearing devices cure hearing loss, they read braille, ASL diminishes language, those with hearing loss wear hearing devices at all times Amanda Zubricki, RDH has bilateral profound hearing loss and is a registered dental hygienist. She is also a mom of three girls, one with hearing loss. Amanda enjoys sharing her raw journey of what it’s like to be a deaf person in life and is making it her life mission to create a more inclusive society where the deaf or hard of hearing people are given equal access to the environment around them that they would otherwise miss out on.
