#77 - Taking Control of Your Own Pleasure (and Others): Sex Toys 101 w/ Shelley of Pleasure Bird

#77 - Taking Control of Your Own Pleasure (and Others): Sex Toys 101 w/ Shelley of Pleasure Bird

I can’t have a sex work podcast without dedicating an entire episode to sex toys! With that being said, I welcome Shelley from Pleasure Bird, Vancouver’s same-day sex toy delivery service. Although Shelley isn’t a sex worker herself, she is an advocate for positive sexual education, sexual wellness and positivity. She started Pleasure Bird last year amidst her own curiosity around sex toys. Although she is no expert, she has been fascinated by the world of sex toys, the joy it brings to individual people, couples and play partners, different sexualities and gender and even its technology. Over the course of the episode we go over the different types of sex toys she offers, her most popular items, and what is new and upcoming in the industry. We even speak about how gendered the marketing is for sex toys. Why is it always geared towards women? Why don’t we talk about male pleasure as well? That, and how beneficial sex toys can come in handy to sex workers. We talk sex shows, camming, the kink community, bondage and restraints, and smart technology. Of course, we only have an hour so this is a great introduction to those who want to try certain toys, equipment or tools and for the curious. #76: Peepshows: Going Beyond the Private Pleasures Booth w/ Sunshine McWane

#76: Peepshows: Going Beyond the Private Pleasures Booth w/ Sunshine McWane

Whatever happened to the peepshow? You know what I’m talking about. The little booth that you can peer through to see scantily-clad women dance for you. Sometimes there were even smaller venues that were connected to sex stores. Some just aired pornographic material 24/7. For a few quarters, you can pop in and get some live entertainment. But where did these venues go? I speak with former peepshow dancer, Sunshine McWane, to speak about her experience of working in numerous peepshow establishments. Sunshine has worked in peepshow venues for years until one the last standing establishments closed its doors for good back in 2019. Before that, she worked at six different venues around the USA, including both location of ever-so-popular, The Lusty Lady, originating in Seattle and then branching out to a sister location in San Francisco. She reminisces of a time when peepshows were in its heyday – employing up to 5 girls a shift on weekend evenings when the club was “stacked”. She speaks about the incomparable comradery with the other ladies in the venue that she just can’t find to this day. We go over fees and payment structure, what happens in a Private Pleasure booth, how peepshow entertainment was a precursor to camming and how technology killed this form of sex work. Sunshine continues her quest of finding these establishment around the country. Do you know of any? #75 - Introducing the Latest Bill That You've Likely Never Heard Of w/ Samantha Knoxx

After a ton of back and forth rescheduled and postponed interviews, the stars aligned and I was finally able to catch a wave with this water-loving Cancer, Samantha Knoxx. Samantha is a full-time companion based in London, Ontario, Canada who has dabbled in all types of sex work: stripping, erotic massage, sugaring, porn, and now finally finding her niche in escorting. Inbetween her busy touring schedule, Samantha also volunteers her time at SafeSpace, a support centre for sex workers. She is fully immersed in dedicating her time and work to this community so I was thrilled when we were able to gettogether and shoot the shit about current issues concerning sex workers in Canada. Samantha discusses in depth the bill that we’ve all been dreading in Canada: Bill 251: Combat Human Trafficking Act. For my American listeners, this is the Canadian equivalent of FOSTA/SESTA. We already have some archaic and unjust bills that have become law (ahem, Bill C-36) but we were both surprised that although this bill passed its first reading in February, we were only hearing news of it now. When was our community going to be called upon, addressed or consulted? Because from the sounds of it, it’s as if everyone else (in a non-sex working capacity) approved and gave the go-ahead. Keen on hearing more? Then you’ll have to tune into this episode with the super articulate, Samantha Knoxx. @samantha_knoxxxoxo twitter.com/SamanthaKn0xx www.samanthaknoxx.com SafeSpace London Butterfly: Stop Bill 251 Don't forget to LIKE, RATE, SHARE, REVIEW and SUBSCRIBE! @strippedbysia @siasteph twitter.com/strippedbysia www.stephsia.com https://www.patreon.com/Strippedbysia

#74 - A Lengthy Battle Ahead: Challenging the Laws that Criminalize Sex Work in Canada w/ Jenn Clamen of the Canadian Alliance Sex Work Law Reform

I've been really excited to release this week's episode as it hits close to home and the news is hot off the press! I was able to catch Jenn Clamen who is the National Coordinator for the Canadian Alliance Sex Work Law Reform here in Canada to discuss the launch of the Charter challenge against the prostitution laws in Canada. We speak about what this may mean for sex workers in Canada, the outcome it hopes to achieve and the amount of exhaustive work that has gone into launching this. Jenn graciously and patiently breaks down the process in what the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is in Canada, what is deemed unconstitutional and what the previous and current Canadian government has done thus far in recognizing the needs of sex workers. To give context, we go even further about how deep this goes into our history with a brief overview of the Canada v. Bedford case which took a similar route which reached the Supreme Court of Canada (the highest court of law in Canada) and what has happened (or should I say, hasn't happened) in recent years. We speak about representation, the opportunities that have been given to law and policy makers here in Canada, fellow organizations and even the prime minister's office with no avail which has frustratingly pushed them to organize and fight for their, simply put, labour rights. It is a PACKED 1-hour conversation that I am so grateful to have had with Jenn. Do give it a listen - I'd be happy to hear your thoughts and feelings on this episode. http://sexworklawreform.com https://www.twitter.com/CDNSWalliance https://www.facebook.com/CASWLR/ Don't forget to LIKE, RATE, SHARE, RATE, REVIEW and SUBSCRIBE! @strippedbysia @siasteph https://www.twitter.com/strippedbysia www.stephsia.com https://www.patreon.com/Strippedbysia

#73 - The Potential Collapse of the Porn Industry Under SISEA and What Autism Looks like in Sex Work w/ Reese Piper

#73 - The Potential Collapse of the Porn Industry Under SISEA and What Autism Looks like in Sex Work w/ Reese Piper

I am feeing so lucky to have connected with former dancer and writer based in Brooklyn, NY, Reese Piper, this week to talk about two things: autism and the Stop Internet Sex Exploitation Act in the USA. Sure, these things may seem like they are unrelated but perhaps they really aren’t. There’s just as much stigma in disability as there is in sex work. But what happens when you’re in both and doubly marginalized? Reese speaks on her very unique experience as an exotic dancer beginning down under in Australia and then in New York City. We also initially connected over re recently-published article in Autostraddle and The Times on how anti-porn legislation distracts us from child sexual abuse at home. It may seem like a stretch but hear Reese out as she bases this on her own personal, lived experience with sexual assault coming in from her own family. We also dig deeper on the impact that this bill could have on sex workers and how detrimental it can be for those specifically in the porn industry. With all of the recent child porn allegations that platforms like PornHub has had to face, will this be happening on other platforms too and will sex workers be ultimately booted off all platforms? There is a lot of speculation but present with valid arguments which is worth a listen. twitter.com/Reese__P How the War on Porn Distracts us from the Realities of Child Sexual Abuse S.5054 - Stop Internet Sexual Exploitation Act Don’t forget to LIKE, RATE, SHARE, REVIEW, and SUBSCRIBE! @strippedbysia @siasteph twitter.com/strippedbysia onlyfans.com/siasteph paypal.me/stephsia www.stephsia.com https://www.patreon.com/Strippedbysia

#72 - Street Walking: The Evolution of Sex Work Before the Age of the Internet w/ Miss Lady Vanessa

#72 - Street Walking: The Evolution of Sex Work Before the Age of the Internet w/ Miss Lady Vanessa

I am beyond ecstatic to bring on Miss Lady Vanessa who is a full-service sex worker based in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Vanessa tells us the most fascinating story of her life in sex work beginning at the ripe age of 16, being groomed by a local pimp in the big city of Vancouver and getting into sex work in the early 1990s. At the time, sex work, besides stripping amongst other things, was really limited to the streets. She was a street-level prostitute for 3 years when she got “hooked”. After her hiatus, a friend of hers introduced her as her duo partner for some in-person dominatrix sessions and she was hooked yet again – round 2! This time around, she was able to set herself up independently, specializing in the girlfriend experience and her most popular, option: NuRu. This episode we speak extensively of what exactly NuRu is and why you should try this service out immediately. It’s a super packed episode and a reminiscent look at the past in terms of what the landscape of sex work was like before sites like OnlyFans, PornHub, and Backpage existed. Take a step back in time with this episode because we’re going way back. We hope that you enjoy the ride! Miss Lady Vanessa is also looking for a brand new NuRu mattress! If anyone has a spare lying around that they don’t need, please contact and connect with her in her preferred links below. www.missladyvanessa.com twitter.com/VanessaNanaimo Don’t forget to LIKE, RATE, SHARE, REVIEW, and SUBSCRIBE! @strippedbysia @siasteph twitter.com/strippedbysia www.stephsia.com

#71 - On the Consumption of Sex Work in the Media: Who is it For? w/ Jessie Sage of Peepshow Media

#71 - On the Consumption of Sex Work in the Media: Who is it For? w/ Jessie Sage of Peepshow Media

I am soooo excited to bring to you all this week, Jessie Sage of Peepshow Media! I have this thing of scrolling on Twitter when I wake up in the morning (because, you know, it's the last "safe" platform we have as sex workers) and I remember stumbling upon Jessie's page recently. I creeped all of her links and quickly found out that she is the co-host of The Peepshow Podcast, editor-in-chief of the Peepshow Magazine (which is a killer resource for sex workers) AND she founded Peepshow Media with her also sex working husband, Peej. I was delighted beyond words when she agreed to come on as a guest for my show. Hooray! Jessie and I got into chatting about a LOT of things: parenting as a sex worker, what role age may play in the type of sex work you do, NiteFlirt, our shared hatred for camming, creating content together with your partner, the gracious support from our community and writing about sex work in open society as an out sex worker. Jessie was able to share with me her recent dog piling of a situation when she was asked to write about sugar daddies for a well-known publication and opens up about how sex work is portrayed in the media. We also take note that there as just as many bad journalists out there reporting on our line of work and although you don't necessarily have to be "in" or participate in sex work to be a great reporter, it's vitally important that you understand and conduct adequate research on it to report responsibly. We speak about the anti-work that journalists of this stature do and how dangerous the repercussions can be. We also widely speak about her media company and the excellent work that she is doing by employing other sex worker writers in contributing to this space. twitter.com/sapiotextual www.jessiesage.com www.peepshowmagazine.com twitter.com/peepshowmedia @curvaceous_sage Don't forget to LIKE, RATE, SHARE, REVIEW, and SUBSCRIBE! @strippedbysia @siasteph www.stephsia.com twitter.com/strippedbysia https://www.patreon.com/Strippedbysia

#70 - Battling Against Anti-Fat Bias, Fat Politics and Fatphobia within the Sex Industry w/ Evie Brookes

#70 - Battling Against Anti-Fat Bias, Fat Politics and Fatphobia within the Sex Industry w/ Evie Brookes

We're gearing up for summer here in Vancouver, Canada (okay, not quite) but this week is all about channeling that BIG. GIRL. ENERGY. I invite escort, Evie Brookes, onto the show this week to speak about her experiences sampling all different types of sex work, finding her niche in escorting, talking all about body image, the terms "BBW" and "plus-size" and reclaiming and owning the word "fat". Evie wears a number of different hats in her life including but not limited to: sex worker, actor, digital content creator, personal stylist and much, much more. In addition to this, she also proudly wears the word "fat" on her shoulders and opens up what it's like to navigate the sex industry as someone who is fat. We speak about the the topic thinprivilege, the differences between being a curvaceous BBW and being fat, and distinguishing that not all fat sex workers are disgusting and raunchy sluts. We talk about desirability amongst larger-bodied women in the industry and what is and what isn't considered sensual. Of course, we discuss all of the stigma that is present and wrapped around the topic amongst those who are considered fat. It is a juuuuuuicy episode and I guarantee y'all will be chanting "big-girl-energy, a big-girl-energy" all week after tuning in. @big.girl.nrg www.eviebrookes.com onlyfans.com/stevielake twitter.com/evie_brookes Don't forget to LIKE, RATE, SHARE, REVIEW and SUBSCRIBE! @strippedbysia @siasteph www.stephsia.com https://www.patreon.com/Strippedbysia twitter.com/strippedbysia
