MEANINGFUL: MARKETING, MENTORING, MATTERING | EPISODE 21 | AAPI HERITAGE MONTH SPECIAL Our guest in this episode is Jayeel Cornelio, Professor of Development Studies at the Ateneo de Manila University, where he holds the Faura Research Foundation Professorial Chair. Currently based as Visiting Professor at the Center for Asian Democracy at the University of Louisville. His scholarly work revolves around the areas of religious change, religion and public life, and the sociology of generations. He authored 6 books, published countless journals and papers and is currently co-running two projects funded by the British Academy. Jayeel finished the PhD in sociology in 2011 at the National University of Singapore as a scholar of the Asia Research Institute and was a visiting scholar at Lancaster University and a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen. He has since held visiting posts at various universities globally. In 2021 he was named among The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines for his contributions to education and sociology. We’ve also seen him as resource person for local and international media companies such as the ANC, CNN Philippines, BBC, Channel News Asia, National Public Radio, Al Jazeera, and The Atlantic to name a few. In this conversation, Jayeel shares his experiences and offers advice for aspiring academics, emphasizing the need for self-belief and the value of building relationships. They also touch on the significance of representation and the need to address internal hierarchies within minority communities. The conversation highlights the importance of acknowledging and addressing hierarchies and inequalities within the AAPI community. It emphasizes the need for honest reflection on the diverse political ideologies, religious convictions, and how individuals perceive and treat each other. The discussion also emphasizes the significance of exposure to different cultures and perspectives through travel and meaningful interactions. Dr. Cornelio's current research focuses on the intersection of religion and politics in the Philippines, aiming to inspire conversations and actions that promote understanding, kindness, and positive change. He encourages individuals to make a difference to others, go beyond themselves, and embrace difficult questions for the common good.
