There is a well-documented correlation between ADHD and gambling addiction, with individuals diagnosed with ADHD being significantly more likely to develop problem gambling behaviors. The impulsivity, difficulty with delayed gratification, and need for stimulation that characterize ADHD can make the fast-paced, high-reward nature of gambling especially appealing. Studies have shown that people with ADHD may be more prone to chasing losses, taking bigger risks, and struggling to stop even when gambling becomes harmful. Additionally, many with undiagnosed or untreated ADHD turn to gambling as a form of escape or self-medication—seeking relief from boredom, restlessness, or emotional distress. This makes early intervention and proper ADHD treatment a critical piece in preventing or addressing gambling addiction.

About Megan: Megan Poliquin, LPCC-S, LICDC-GAMB, is the Manager of Gambling Treatment and Prevention Programs at the Zepf Center in Toledo, Ohio. For the past 7 years, she has been dedicated to providing therapy to individuals with gambling disorders, many of whom are also navigating recovery from other substance use or mental health challenges.
