The Night He Saw Someone He Shouldn’t Have | After Midnight

At the time, it didn’t feel like anything worth holding onto.

He was eleven, sent downstairs during a routine church night to grab something from the basement. It was quiet, the kind of quiet that always felt a little different from the rest of the building, but nothing about it seemed out of place.

And then he saw her.

It didn’t startle him. It didn’t feel wrong. It was just one of those moments that didn’t seem important enough to question, especially when someone else offered a simple explanation and moved on.

So he did too. The memory faded the way most small things do, eventually becoming something he barely thought about at all.

Until years later, when a detail came up that didn’t line up. And once it didn’t…there wasn’t a way to make it fit again.
