Ep23 - Is mahjong really this different in each country?

Wait, is it really this different? Even though we use the same mahjong tiles, the rules feel different. It almost feels like a different game. Today, I’ll share my experience with mahjong.

Have you ever played mahjong?

When I was in Japan, I often played with my friends.

I liked those slow evenings when we gathered and played.

After coming to Singapore, I also had chances to play mahjong.

At that moment, the first thing I thought was,

“Wow, this is so easy.”

After hearing the rules a little, I could start playing right away.

What surprised me most was how you win.

You can win even after calling tiles like chi or pon.

I thought, “Is that really okay?”

In Japanese mahjong, there are many conditions.

For example, you need specific patterns to win.

If your hand includes certain tiles like 1 or 9, or special tiles,

the conditions can change.

In some cases, calling tiles means you cannot win.

So Japanese mahjong feels a bit difficult.

On the other hand, Singapore mahjong is very simple.

It feels like you can win as long as you make a shape.

So the game moves very quickly.

It keeps going fast.

There was another thing I found interesting.

There are tiles like birds, cats, mice, and centipedes.

When I first saw them,

I thought, “What are these for?”

When I asked, I learned they are like bonus tiles.

If you have them, you get extra points.

it felt very fresh to me.

When you notice these differences,

it feels like a completely different game.

I don’t think one is better than the other.

They are just different ways to play.

Like with cards, there are many ways to play.

It feels similar to that.

If you are starting from now,

Singapore mahjong may be easier to start with.

The rules are simple, and you can enjoy it quickly.

On the other hand, if you like thinking slowly,

you might prefer Japanese mahjong.

I think both are interesting.

It’s nice to choose depending on your mood.

Experiencing these differences

feels very interesting to me.
