The 747 That Flew Sideways

A long-haul passenger flight in 2002 faced a severe in-flight emergency over the Bering Sea when a critical flight control malfunction caused the aircraft to suddenly roll and become extremely difficult to steer.
The issue was traced to a rudder system failure that forced the aircraft into an uncommanded deflection, creating a dangerous imbalance and placing the aircraft in a near-uncontrollable attitude. The crew quickly recognized that automated systems could not resolve the situation and transitioned to manual control.
Through coordinated effort and continuous adjustments to engine thrust and flight controls, the pilots were able to counteract the extreme forces acting on the aircraft. Despite the severity of the malfunction, they managed to stabilize the plane and divert it to Anchorage for an emergency landing, saving everyone on board.
Investigators later determined that the cause was a hidden structural issue within a hydraulic control component, where metal fatigue led to a sudden mechanical failure. This discovery prompted significant safety improvements, including redesigns of critical rudder system components and the introduction of protective measures to prevent similar failures.
The incident became a key example of the importance of pilot skill, communication, and the ability to manually control an aircraft when automated systems fail.
