The Enigma of EgyptAir Flight 990

The Enigma of EgyptAir Flight 990

In 1999, EgyptAir Flight 990 plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 217 people on board and triggering one of the most controversial investigations in modern aviation history.
The investigation became a fierce dispute over what happened inside the cockpit during the final moments of the flight. American investigators concluded that the aircraft was deliberately forced into a fatal dive by the relief first officer, while Egyptian authorities strongly rejected that explanation and argued that a mechanical failure in the aircraft's elevator control system was responsible.
Conflicting interpretations of the cockpit voice recordings, aircraft systems, and mechanical evidence deepened the divide between the two investigations. Each side reached dramatically different conclusions about how and why the Boeing 767 suddenly descended into the ocean.
More than two decades later, Flight 990 remains surrounded by controversy. The tragedy is not only a story of 217 lost lives, but also a haunting example of how the same evidence can lead investigators to completely different answers.
