Who was the most brilliant strategist of World War II? Many historians point to German Field Marshal Erich von Manstein.

In this episode, we explore the life and battlefield genius of one of Hitler’s most capable commanders during World War II. Manstein was the architect behind Germany’s daring 1940 invasion of France—the Manstein Plan, which enabled German forces to bypass the heavily defended Maginot Line and strike through the Ardennes in one of the most dramatic military victories in modern history.

Later on the Eastern Front, Manstein commanded German armies in brutal campaigns against the Soviet Union, including the Battle of Sevastopol and the desperate fighting following the disaster at Battle of Stalingrad. His operational brilliance helped Germany win several dramatic victories, including the counteroffensive like the Third Battle of Kharkov.

But Manstein’s legacy remains controversial. After the war, he was tried and convicted for war crimes related to actions on the Eastern Front—raising difficult questions about the responsibility of military commanders in the Nazi war effort.

Who was Romania’s most important general on the Eastern Front during World War II? One name stands out: Petre Dumitrescu.

In part of this episode, we explore the career of Dumitrescu, one of Ion Antonescu’s most capable commanders and the officer who led Romanian forces alongside Germany during the war against the Soviet Union.

Dumitrescu commanded the Romanian Third Army during Operation Barbarossa, helping push deep into Soviet territory and taking part in the brutal campaign for Battle of Odessa. His troops later fought in the southern sector of the Eastern Front, eventually holding the long and vulnerable Axis flank along the Don River during the critical months of 1942.

Everything changed during the Soviet counteroffensive that surrounded the German Sixth Army at the Battle of Stalingrad. Dumitrescu’s army bore the brunt of the Soviet assault in Operation Uranus, where Romanian forces—poorly equipped with anti-tank weapons—faced overwhelming Soviet armored attacks.

Despite the collapse of the front, Dumitrescu remained one of Romania’s most respected commanders and was awarded the prestigious Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his leadership.
