Ep32 - A small cultural difference I noticed at karaoke

I talk about karaoke memories in Japan and a cultural difference I noticed in Singapore.

==Japanese and English scripts==

When I was a university student, and for a few years after I started working,

I often went to karaoke.

At that time, I sometimes sang from night until morning.

I sang until about five in the morning.

When I think about it now, I feel I had a lot of energy.

I cannot do that now.

I would probably get sleepy halfway through.

I did not really like drinking parties.

I do not like drinking alcohol either.

But actually, I really enjoyed going to karaoke after drinking parties.

Sometimes I thought, “I hope we go to karaoke soon.”

At karaoke, you can have fun without drinking alcohol.

Just listening to friends sing is fun.

Singing by yourself is fun too.

When I use a slightly loud voice, I feel refreshed.

I am really grateful that there is karaoke in Singapore too.

Also, I can choose Japanese songs.

When I find a Japanese song I want to sing, I feel happy.

I think, “Oh, they have this song.”

But when I go to karaoke in Singapore,

there is also a different kind of fun from Japan.

People in Singapore sing English songs and Chinese songs.

For me, listening to that feels very fresh.

There are songs I do not know.

But when I see everyone singing happily, I also feel happy.

And when I went to karaoke, I noticed a small cultural difference.

It was the way people choose songs.

Of course, I think it depends on the people and the group.

But when I went to karaoke with friends in Japan,

we often chose one song each.

One person chooses one song.

The next person also chooses one song.

Then we sing in order.

So I can roughly know when my turn will come.

“Three more people.”

“Two more people.”

I waited while feeling excited.

I also liked waiting for my turn while listening to other people sing.

But in Singapore, it was a little different.

In a way, it is a battle.

People who want to sing keep adding their own songs.

And they put their songs at the very front of the queue.

I think, “Wait, where did my song go?”

It was supposed to be next,

but suddenly it is far behind.

If I quietly wait for my turn, maybe I will never get to sing.

Of course, I am not angry at all.

Karaoke is a fun place.

So I do not feel irritated.

Instead, I thought, “I see. So this is how it works.”

In Japan, there was the fun of waiting for my turn.

In Singapore, it seems like I need to enjoy karaoke in a slightly different way.

It is not about which one is correct.

I just thought it was an interesting cultural difference.

Next time I go to karaoke, I think I will become a little stronger.

If there is a song I want to sing, I will not just wait quietly.

I will try putting my song near the front too.

Maybe that is one way to enjoy karaoke in Singapore.
