Why Accepting Reality Brings More Peace (Even When It’s Hard)

Why Accepting Reality Brings More Peace (Even When It’s Hard)

In this episode of Midlife with Brooke, we talk about a simple idea that can feel surprisingly hard to live: accepting reality.

So often, we don’t realize we’re resisting what’s actually happening. We think we’re just seeing things clearly… but underneath it, there’s a quiet argument with reality:

This shouldn’t be happening.

They shouldn’t have done that.

It was supposed to be different.

That resistance adds a layer of suffering that keeps us stuck.

Brooke introduces the powerful concept of clean pain vs. dirty pain:

  • Clean pain is the honest, human emotion that comes with hard experiences—grief, disappointment, sadness.
  • Dirty pain is what we add on top—blame, regret, judgment, and the belief that things shouldn’t be the way they are.

Through personal stories and real-life examples, you’ll hear how this shows up in:

  • Relationships with adult children
  • Marriage and unmet expectations
  • Health challenges and setbacks
  • Parenting decisions you don’t agree with

When you learn to separate facts from the stories your mind creates, everything begins to shift.

Acceptance doesn’t mean you like what’s happening.

It doesn’t mean you approve or give up.

It simply means you’re willing to say:

“This is what’s happening right now.”

And from that place, you can think more clearly, feel more grounded, and decide how you want to move forward.

💡 In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
  • The difference between clean pain and dirty pain
  • How resisting reality creates more suffering
  • Why your nervous system matters in acceptance
  • How to separate facts from the stories you’re telling
  • Simple ways to move from stuck → steady

❤️ Questions to Reflect On:
  • Where am I adding suffering to something that’s already hard?
  • What am I resisting right now?
  • What would it look like to feel the pain… without adding more on top?
