The problem is not willpower. The mistake most people make is trying to stop the behavior without addressing the inner emotional pressure that is driving it. When you just stop seeking reassurance without working on what is underneath, the anxiety doesn't go away. It shifts. You end up with a new theme, a new compulsion, or a new obsession, and the cycle continues.
