EPISODE 52: Could It Be Lipedema? Symptoms, Diagnosis & How GLP-1s Changed Everything with Kristin Richards

EPISODE 52: Could It Be Lipedema? Symptoms, Diagnosis & How GLP-1s Changed Everything with Kristin Richards

Welcome back to Peptides for Women podcast!

In this episode, I'm joined by Kristin Richards, a certified menopause coach, lipedema advocate, and health educator, to share her powerful journey from decades of frustration and medical gaslighting to finally receiving a lipedema diagnosis, and finding life-changing relief through hormone optimization, GLP-1 therapy, lifestyle changes, and surgery.

For nearly 40 years, Kristin believed her disproportionately painful legs were simply "how God made her." After years of being told to lose weight, exercise more, and accept her symptoms, she discovered she had lipedema- a misunderstood connective tissue disorder that primarily affects women and is often triggered by hormonal changes like puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Together, we discuss what lipedema actually is, why it's so commonly misdiagnosed, how inflammation plays a major role, and why GLP-1 peptides have become an important tool in Kristin's long-term health strategy. We also dive into the emotional side of finally receiving a diagnosis, advocating for yourself in the medical system, and helping more women recognize they aren't simply "lazy" or lacking willpower.

In this episode, we cover:

  • What lipedema is and how it differs from obesity and lymphedema
  • Why hormonal changes often trigger lipedema progression
  • The genetic and connective tissue components of the condition
  • Common signs and symptoms women often overlook
  • Kristin's personal journey to receiving a diagnosis after nearly four decades
  • The connection between PCOS, menopause, inflammation, and lipedema
  • Why microdosing GLP-1s became part of Kristin's long-term wellness plan
  • Lipedema surgery: what the procedure involves, recovery, and insurance coverage
  • The importance of compression garments and daily movement
  • Anti-inflammatory nutrition strategies that support lipedema management
  • Kristin's current peptide stack beyond GLP-1s
  • The growing awareness of lipedema and why advocacy matters
