Why Did Kouri Richins Promise To Come Home After Her Sons' Pleas?

Why Did Kouri Richins Promise To Come Home After Her Sons' Pleas?

Kouri Richins' children asked a judge to lock her away forever. Minutes later, she stood up and effectively told them she's coming back. This look back breaks down both halves of that courtroom — the boys' statements and the mother's response — word by word.

Three sons described what life inside that house had been like: locked bedroom doors, a mother they said was drunk almost daily, threats against their animals, an older brother sneaking food and care to a younger one because no adult was doing it. A childhood defined, they said, by a parent who was either absent or impaired. They handed those words to their therapists because they still can't face the woman prosecutors say destroyed their family — and each of them asked the court for the same thing: keep her away, because they finally feel safe and that ends the second she's free.

Kouri's response acknowledged none of it. Not the locked doors. Not the threats against their pets. Instead, she spoke for more than half an hour — about her marriage, her love story, her fight — told the boys to "be like your dad," the man a jury convicted her of killing, suggested his death may not have been what prosecutors claimed, and promised children who say they're terrified of her that she's coming home. This look back plays her statement back against theirs and reads the disconnect for what it is. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.
