How Forensics Solved the Lockerbie Bombing

The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988 remains one of the most devastating aviation terrorist attacks in history, killing 270 people over Lockerbie.
Investigators carried out an extensive forensic analysis, meticulously reconstructing wreckage and examining microscopic debris to determine whether the disaster was caused by mechanical failure or sabotage. This evidence ultimately shifted the focus toward state-linked involvement, leading to the identification and prosecution of individuals connected to Libyan intelligence networks, including Abdelbaset al-Megrahi.
The investigation revealed how a single piece of unaccompanied luggage, bypassing security controls, triggered a chain of destruction that brought down the aircraft. The case resulted in major legal and political consequences, as well as sweeping changes to international aviation security standards designed to prevent similar attacks in the future.
