Tragedy in Jeddah: The Fall of Nation Air 2120

This episode examines the tragic crash of Nigeria Airways Flight 2120 in 1991, a DC-8 charter that was destroyed by an uncontrollable in-flight fire shortly after takeoff from Jeddah. What began as a routine departure quickly escalated into a fatal emergency when an issue with underinflated tires during taxiing led to extreme overheating.
After takeoff, the overheated tires ignited, and once the landing gear was retracted, the fire spread into the wheel well. The flames damaged critical hydraulic systems and rapidly compromised the aircraft’s structural integrity, leaving the crew with no effective means of control.
The investigation revealed that the disaster was not only the result of a technical failure but also deeper organizational problems, including poor maintenance practices and pressure to maintain tight schedules. These conditions contributed to overlooked safety issues and falsified records.
All 261 people on board were killed, making it one of the deadliest aviation accidents involving a Canadian airline. The tragedy led to major safety improvements, including enhanced tire pressure monitoring, wheel well fire detection systems, and stricter maintenance oversight across the industry.
