Beyond hydrocarbons, the United States Geological Survey has announced new work on critical minerals and groundwater. Working with NASA, Survey scientists used high altitude hyperspectral imaging, that is, extremely detailed color and light measurements from aircraft at about sixty five thousand feet, to map mineral signatures across large swaths of the western United States. According to the agency, this effort supports the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative by pinpointing zones that may host copper, lithium, rare earth elements, and other strategic deposits, while also revealing previously unknown structures and alteration zones tied to ancient hydrothermal systems. In the eastern United States, a separate Survey assessment in the Northern Appalachian region indicates that lithium in certain sedimentary and clay rich formations in states such as Maine could theoretically replace current United States imports for a century or more, if future drilling confirms the concentrations and if extraction proves practical and environmentally sound. Geology is also driving new tools for water management. The United States Geological Survey has introduced a nationwide decision support resource that integrates bedrock and sediment maps, aquifer geometry, surface water networks, and climate data to help communities answer a deceptively simple question, do we have enough water. By tying together geologic frameworks with demand projections, this tool highlights regions where declining snowpack, limited groundwater recharge, and heavily fractured bedrock may create emerging stress points, especially in the Rocky Mountain West and parts of the High Plains. Globally, recent geology research adds broader context.
