Rogue Planets: The Hidden Worlds Drifting Without Stars

Across the Milky Way, planetary-mass objects appear to move without detectable parent stars. Some may be former planets thrown out of young solar systems. Others may have formed more like very small stars, from collapsing gas, never belonging to a sun at all. Because most emit little or no visible light, astronomers often find them indirectly, through gravitational microlensing: a brief brightening of a distant background star caused by the gravity of an unseen foreground object. OGLE and MOA surveys have reported short-timescale microlensing events consistent with free-floating or very wide-orbit planets, while later studies have revised early estimates of how common Jupiter-mass rogues may be. Infrared surveys of young stellar associations, including Upper Scorpius, and observations from the James Webb Space Telescope in young regions such as NGC 1333, have also found isolated planetary-mass candidates whose origins remain debated. This episode follows the evidence behind rogue planets: how a functioning planetary system can eject a world, why the boundary between planets and brown dwarfs is uncertain, why some candidate pairs are difficult to explain, and whether a starless world could preserve moons, internal heat, or a buried ocean.
