They Changed 90s Music Forever: Oasis, Nirvana, Snoop Dogg & The Untold Stories….

This week, I’m opening The New Mind Podcast archive & bringing back two extraordinary conversations with two men who witnessed music history being made from completely different sides of the industry.

These interviews were originally released when The New Mind Podcast was much smaller. Since then, the audience has grown enormously, so many of you will never have heard them.

They’re simply too good to stay buried in the archive!!

So this episode features former Island Records Managing Director Marc Marot & legendary broadcaster & presenter of Channel 4’s The Word, Terry Christian.

Marc Marot spent his career at the heart of the international music business. He began at Blue Mountain Music, associated with the catalogues of Bob Marley & U2, before becoming the youngest Managing Director of Island Records at just 29.

His career put him alongside some of the most important artists & movements in modern music, with Island during his tenure associated with artists including Ice Cube, NWA, Pulp, The Cranberries, Tricky, Stereo MC’s, P.M. Dawn, Nine Inch Nails, The Orb, PJ Harvey & many more

Marc takes us behind the curtain of the record industry, sharing what happens when extraordinary talent, enormous personalities, money, ambition, creativity, pressure & fame collide.

Then there’s Terry Christian….

For millions who grew up in Britain during the 1990s, Terry was the unmistakable face of Channel 4’s The Word, one of the most controversial, anarchic & culturally significant youth television programmes of its generation.

Long before YouTube, TikTok, Instagram or Spotify could launch an artist overnight, television could change a career.

The Word became a platform for artists who would go on to dominate global music, including Nirvana, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Jamiroquai & Oasis, whose appearance performing Supersonic became their first television performance.

Terry takes us back inside that extraordinary period of British culture & talks about music, television, fame, class, controversy, celebrity & what was really happening behind the scenes.

One man was helping shape music from inside one of the world’s most influential record labels.

The other was helping put a new generation of artists in front of millions of people.

Together, their stories offer a remarkable window into an era before algorithms, influencers & social media, when record labels, television, radio, magazines & a handful of cultural gatekeepers could help determine what the world heard next.

If you love 90s music, Britpop, Oasis, U2, Nirvana, hip hop, music documentaries, music industry stories, Channel 4’s The Word or hearing what really happens behind fame, this episode is for you.
