Fewer Cavities, More Bankruptcies

Japan beat cavities so well its dentists are now going bankrupt in record numbers.

At a public health center just before closing time, Haru and Sakura trace a story hidden inside a brown envelope — the dental checkup results every Japanese child once dreaded. Today those envelopes come back clean: fluoride toothpaste pushed child cavities from one in four down to one in twenty-five. But victory has a price. Dental clinics — still more numerous than convenience stores — posted record revenue of over one trillion yen (about 6.4 billion dollars) and record bankruptcies in the very same year.

The two unpack why almost half of Japanese adults still see the dentist as "a place you go when it hurts," why 170,000 licensed dental hygienists aren't practicing, and how 3D-printed dentures and mobile dental vans are reaching Japan's "denture refugees." Then comes the twist: from 2027, Japan plans dental checkups for the entire nation — and a Kyoto startup is testing a drug that could regrow lost teeth by 2030.
