Building Cultural Bridges to the Iranian People

Hanna Jahanforooz, Alliance Center for Iranian Studies, Tel Aviv University

Our guest is the Tehran-born analyst, researcher, and musician Hanna Jahanforooz. She describes herself as ‘an Iranian cultural researcher, lecturer, and world music singer.’ She immigrated to Israel at the age of 12 following the Islamic Revolution. She holds a Master's degree in Middle Eastern and African Studies from Tel Aviv University, and frequently appears in the media and on various stages to analyze society, culture, and the status of women in Iran.

Her life's mission is to separate the brutal regime from the people and the glorious culture in the Israeli mind. ‘Iran is a 2,500-year-old cultural treasure. My goal in music and research is to be a bridge,’ she says. In her research, she reveals the painful sides of Iran that the media doesn't show: such as street children who help support their families by working on the streets, and the wrestlers, the folk cultural heroes, who came out against the regime."
