What Came Home with the Doll? | After Midnight

Her first Christmas in a new home brought her one gift: a porcelain doll unlike any she had ever seen.

It looked sad. It sat hunched on a shelf above where she slept. And before long, strange little things began happening around the room. At first, she could explain them away.

Then, on one particularly difficult night, the doll fell onto her in a way that didn’t make sense. Another toy suddenly spoke a phrase it had never used before. And after she fled the room, she heard something moving above her.

Years later, she would learn there was a name for dolls some people believe can hold something more than stuffing and porcelain.

But was that really what her mother had given her that Christmas?
