A worsening snowstorm forced them off the road and into a small mountain town where there weren’t many options for the night. One motel was cheaper than the rest, though everything about it—from the nearly empty parking lot to the outdated rooms—made her question whether saving a few dollars was really worth it.

Before checking in, she read the reviews. Most complained about stained sheets, cigarette burns and a place badly in need of renovation. But one guest described something much stranger that had happened in the middle of the night.
