Fall Asleep to The Mystery of the Vatican's Chronovisor

In 1972, a Benedictine monk named Father Pellegrino Ernetti told an Italian newspaper that he and a team of scientists — including, he said, Enrico Fermi and Wernher von Braun — had built a machine capable of receiving images and sounds from the past. He called it the Chronovisor. He said it captured residual electromagnetic radiation, the faint traces of light and sound that every event leaves behind as it radiates outward into the universe, growing fainter but never reaching zero. He produced a single photograph that he claimed showed the face of Christ during the crucifixion. The photograph was later found to closely match a wooden crucifix in a church in Perugia. The Vatican has never confirmed or denied the machine's existence. Ernetti died in 1994 without fully retracting his claim.

Tonight we sit with the Chronovisor — not to argue that it was real, because the evidence strongly suggests it was not, but to understand why a respected scholar risked his reputation on a claim he could not substantiate, why the Vatican chose silence over denial, and why the idea of a machine that could see the past has never stopped resonating.
