Australia's Secret UFO Investigation System

Australia once operated a formal government system for investigating UFOs and unusual aerial sightings. In Episode 3 of the International UAP Sightings mini-series, UFO to UAP Explained investigates the Royal Australian Air Force files, the 35-part archive of “Reports on Flying Saucers and Other Aerial Objects,” intelligence and civil aviation involvement, and unexplained activity around sensitive locations including Woomera and Maralinga. The episode examines how the RAAF assessed sightings, why some cases remained unidentified, and what Australia’s National Archives reveal about decades of official government interest in UFOs.

The investigation then moves into the modern UAP era: why Australia abandoned its dedicated reporting system, what Defence now says about unidentified anomalous phenomena, Australia’s involvement in Five Eyes UAP discussions, and how recent pilot reports can become buried inside aviation databases. ATSB records include a 2022 Boeing 737 encounter near Sydney involving an unidentified object and a 2024 Moorabbin report involving another unidentified object during initial climb—raising an important question: did Australia stop encountering unexplained objects, or did it simply stop maintaining a system designed to identify them?
