What the Adelson Family Did When Dan Markel Said No

Dan Markel won a custody ruling that kept his two sons in Tallahassee. His ex-wife Wendi couldn't move them south. Her mother Donna allegedly offered Markel a million dollars to change his mind — and when he refused, prosecutors say the Adelson family ordered a contract killing. Two hitmen drove from Miami, followed Dan from his gym, and shot him in his own garage on July 18, 2014. He was 41 years old.This is the first installment of a four-part series covering the entire Adelson murder-for-hire conspiracy. What investigators found was a payment trail running through the family's dental practice near Fort Lauderdale — 44 checks signed by the grandmother to a woman who never worked there, $138,000 in documented payments, cash that Donna Adelson allegedly washed before handing it off. The hitmen were traced by a toll transponder on a rental car in a city that doesn't have toll roads.The FBI built a trap in 2016 — an undercover agent approached Donna outside her Miami condo and handed her a murder article with the killers' names on it. She didn't call the police. She called Charlie. Three times. Then Charlie met his girlfriend at a Miami Beach restaurant where the FBI recorded forty-one minutes of conversation. What prosecutors say Charlie said on that tape would eventually put him in prison for life.
