He wrote her love letters and promised he would always protect her, making Haley feel that she had finally been chosen. Yet while she was imagining their future, he was quietly learning which parts of her could be used to prevent her from ever walking away. By the time Haley recognized the danger, the abuser had convinced her that they were married in the eyes of God and that leaving him could cost her everything she believed about herself. As the relationship grew more terrifying, the abuser slowly dismantled Haley’s trust in her own reality, keeping her lost in the fog of abuse for three years.
