IN THIS EPISODELast week we said mantra is the deity in sound. This week: what happens when that sound takes shape? The tradition makes a claim that sounds almost like physics — form is frozen vibration, and geometry is what sound looks like. A yantra is not a picture of the divine; it is the divine's architecture. We begin in Kāñcīpuram, where Ādi Śaṅkara met a Goddess too fierce to approach — and instead of appeasing her, he drew her: the Śrī Cakra that gave her fire a hearth.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN✦ What a yantra actually is: yam (to hold) + tra (instrument) — a machine for holding the divine, and equally the mind

✦ Sound becoming matter: nāda (vibration) → bindu (point) → kalā (form) — and its modern echo in cymatics, where sound arranges sand into geometry
