The Watchers Descended on Mount Hermon | The Book of Enoch EP 2

The Watchers Descended on Mount Hermon | The Book of Enoch EP 2

Two hundred Watchers descend on Mount Hermon. They swear an oath. They take human wives. They teach humanity forbidden knowledge. Their offspring become the giants remembered as the Nephilim. And according to the Book of the Watchers, what happens after those giants die may explain one of the biggest unanswered questions in the Bible: Where do demons come from? In Episode 2 of our Book of Enoch Arc, we open 1 Enoch chapters 1–36, the oldest section of the Enochic collection. We examine: • The 200 Watchers who descend on Mount Hermon • Semjaza/Shemihazah and the oath of rebellion • Azazel and the teaching of weapons, metallurgy and forbidden knowledge • The giants and the violence that precedes the Flood • The Book of Giants discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls • The strange appearance of Gilgamesh in an Enochic giant tradition • Enoch's attempt to intercede for the fallen Watchers • Why their request for mercy is rejected • The Enochic explanation for the origin of evil spirits • The imprisonment of the fallen angels • Jude's references to angels who abandoned their proper dwelling • Peter's reference to Tartarus and spirits imprisoned since the days of Noah • Mount Hermon, Caesarea Philippi and the “Gates of Hell” • The possibility that the Transfiguration occurred on Mount Hermon Genesis gives only a handful of verses describing the sons of God, daughters of men and Nephilim. The Book of the Watchers gives the expanded story that many Jews living before and during the time of Jesus would have known. That does not automatically make 1 Enoch Scripture. But it may help explain the language used by Jude, Peter and other New Testament writers when they describe rebellious angels, wandering stars, chains of darkness and spirits imprisoned since the days of Noah. And then there is Mount Hermon. According to 1 Enoch, the rebellion began there. Centuries later Jesus brings His disciples to Caesarea Philippi at the mountain's southern foot and declares: “Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Coincidence? Historical context? Or was Jesus making a deliberate declaration of authority on territory associated with an ancient rebellion? This is The Book of Enoch — Episode 2: The Book of the Watchers.
