Measles Crisis in Bangladesh Claims Over 1,000 Young Lives in Five Months

Bangladesh is currently facing its most severe measles outbreak in decades, with the number of child fatalities officially surpassing 1,002 as of September 9, 2026. Since the outbreak began in March 2026, there have been 187,484 reported infections among children, predominantly affecting those aged between 6 months and 5 years.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has acknowledged that shortcomings in a previous vaccination campaign contributed to the epidemic, leaving around 4 million children unprotected.

A UNICEF situation report indicated that 72% of the infected children had not received any doses of the two-dose vaccine, while 16% had only received partial vaccination. Earlier vaccination efforts were severely disrupted by strikes and political instability.

The widespread issue of chronic malnutrition among children has significantly compromised their immune systems, leading to more severe complications from measles, such as serious breathing issues and brain swelling.

Medical facilities, especially specialized institutions like the Dhaka Shishu Hospital, are completely overwhelmed. The healthcare system is also under immense pressure from a significant rise in dengue fever cases, pushing hospital capacities to their breaking point.

In response, health authorities are urgently working to control the highly contagious virus by launching a mass immunization campaign, having already vaccinated over 18 million children and aiming to reach an additional 1.6 million in areas that missed out.
