How does a boy raised in Klan country, in a Pentecostal town, studying Hitler, end up leading a movement built on racial integration?

Part three of a five-part series on Jim Jones. Parts one and two covered his parents and his earliest years; this one covers the world outside the house — and it is a genuinely strange one.

Indiana in the 1920s and 30s was one of the Ku Klux Klan's strongest footholds in the country, to the point where the Klan effectively controlled the state. That is the political weather Jim Jones grew up in. Add the Pentecostal revival tradition — the faith healing, the performance, the crowd work he would later use with total fluency — the Great Depression flattening a small town, and a boy who reportedly studied Hitler and the mechanics of how a leader moves a crowd.

Therapists Shannon and Cathy look at what a child absorbs from all of that, and at the contradiction sitting in the middle of it: the man who came out of Klan-era Indiana built a congregation around racial integration and then destroyed it.
