Biography Flash: Colbert Returns to Late Night, Emmy Wins and Scripto Millions

Stephen Colbert Biography Flash a weekly Biography. Stephen Colbert has spent the past few days turning a post Late Show limbo into a new, very active chapter. Entertainment Weekly reports that Jimmy Kimmel announced on his Thursday broadcast that Colbert will make his first return to late night as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live this Tuesday, September 15, the night after the Primetime Emmys. EW notes that Kimmel hyped it as Colbert’s “return to late-night television,” marking his first on-air visit to a talk-show desk since The Late Show with Stephen Colbert signed off in May 2026. Similar coverage from Consequence and Nerdist underscores the symbolic weight of this appearance: after eleven years as a host, Colbert is about to re-enter the nightly comedy conversation from the other side of the desk, a move that could signal how visible he intends to remain in the genre. Awards-wise, Colbert’s final Late Show season is dominating the 2026 Creative Arts Emmys. TV Insider reports that The Late Show won five awards out of nine nominations, including Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, plus key technical categories in lighting, editing, and technical direction. Noise11 and Deadline-style roundups add that the show’s digital companion, Colbert Before Air, scored the Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series, bringing his team’s total to six trophies just months after CBS canceled the franchise. These wins are likely to loom large in any future biography: they recast his controversial exit from CBS as an artistic high point rather than just a corporate decision. On the business front, The Hollywood Reporter, as summarized by EpisodeBreakdown, reveals that Colbert has secured around 5 million dollars in seed funding for Scripto, his screenwriting and production software company. The round includes Colbert’s own money, investments from his wife Evelyn McGee Colbert, and backing from heavy hitters like J.J. Abrams and Mark Cuban, positioning Scripto as a potentially significant second act in Hollywood’s behind-the-scenes creative infrastructure. Politically and culturally, Reuters recently revisited Colbert’s February claim that CBS lawyers forced his interview with Texas Senate candidate James Talarico off broadcast and onto YouTube, where it has drawn well over 9 million views, in light of new equal-time rules affecting talk shows. Conservative outlets like Breitbart have criticized that episode as a manufactured censorship story, highlighting the polarized way Colbert’s mix of comedy and politics continues to be received. There are ongoing pundit suggestions that his Kimmel visit could be a soft test of audience appetite for a longer-term late-night comeback, but that remains speculation and has not been confirmed by Colbert or any network.
