Biography Flash: Stephen Colberts New Chapter From Late Show Exit to Middle Earth

Stephen Colbert Biography Flash a weekly Biography. Stephen Colbert is entering his post Late Show chapter with a striking mix of awards, reinvention, and just enough showbiz mischief. The biggest recent development came Tuesday night, when he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, his first major late night interview since The Late Show ended. According to The A.V. Club, Colbert had shaved his beard, looked relaxed, and said he does not miss the late night grind. The appearance also helped Kimmel, drawing 3.62 million viewers, his largest audience since last spring, according to LateNighter. Colbert’s most consequential new business activity is his work on a Lord of the Rings film. At the 2026 Emmy Awards, where the final season of The Late Show won three awards, including outstanding variety talk series, Colbert said he is writing the movie with Philippa Boyens and his son, Peter McGee. The project is reportedly titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, although that title remains tentative. Colbert joked that writing a Middle Earth movie is effectively a full time job. The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline have previously identified him as part of the screenplay team, making this more than a casual celebrity attachment and potentially the most important creative pivot of his career. The Emmy appearance also produced a political headline. Rolling Stone reports that Colbert said freedom of expression is doing well, while avoiding questions about Donald Trump and Bari Weiss. His comment carries extra weight because The Late Show ended amid Paramount corporate upheaval, after Colbert criticized the company’s settlement with Trump. CBS described the cancellation as a financial decision unrelated to the show’s performance or content. Back in New York, the physical farewell continued. LateNighter and USA Today report that crews removed The Late Show marquee from the Ed Sullivan Theater and replaced it, four months after Colbert’s final broadcast on May 21. The theater’s makeover is a vivid reminder that the 33 year Late Show franchise is now closed. There are no verified major new social media announcements in the available reporting. Claims of an imminent new television show or political return remain unconfirmed. Thank you for listening.
