The Cold Trail: Applying Forensic Science to Cold Cases

What happens when a case goes cold — but the evidence doesn’t?

In this episode of The Evidence Trail, I’m joined by Charley McClellan, a Forensic Science student at Nottingham Trent University with a particular interest in applying forensic science to cold cases.

Charley talks about her journey into forensic science, the experiences that have shaped her interest in the field, and her involvement with the International Cold Case Analysis Project (ICCAP).

We explore how advances in DNA technology are transforming the investigation of long-standing cases, including Charley’s research into mitochondrial DNA, and consider where these developments could take cold-case investigations in the future.

We also discuss what it’s really like to work on an international research project, the growing importance of cold-case investigation, and the skills and experiences that can help the next generation of forensic scientists build a career in the field.
