*Nick Reiner's Parents Opposed THIS — Even After He Allegedly Killed Them*

Nick Reiner will not face the death penalty for the alleged murders of his parents. DA Nathan Hochman made the announcement after speaking with the Reiner siblings and reviewing the case. He would not disclose what the family asked for. Sources with direct knowledge told TMZ that Rob and Michele Reiner's own opposition to capital punishment was a significant factor. The decision removes the most severe possible sentence from a case that never realistically faced it. California hasn't carried out an execution since 2006. Hochman campaigned on reversing the moratorium, kept death on the table for nine months, and pulled it. The same DA who fought the Menendez family's wishes on resentencing and called their self-defense claim fabricated. What remains is the harder question. Nick Reiner's defense will likely center on his documented mental illness — schizoaffective disorder, a conservatorship, medications changed weeks before the murders. Under California law, the burden of proving insanity falls entirely on the defendant. No middle ground exists since the state abolished diminished capacity. The defense has to prove Nick didn't understand what he was doing, period. The prosecution doesn't have to prove he was sane. It sits and watches. And the lying-in-wait special circumstance the grand jury added alleges Nick concealed his purpose, waited, and ambushed his parents. If the prosecution proves that allegation, the insanity defense has to explain how a man in psychosis plans an attack.
