The Odyssey Sleep Story, Episode 11: The Dog Remembered

Tonight's episode holds one of the oldest, quietest gut-punches in all of literature — a dog who waits twenty years for someone to come home, and recognizes him instantly, when every human in the house is fooled completely. There's something almost unbearably tender about being truly known by someone who never needed proof, an explanation, or a disguise removed. This is a sleep story continuing an abridged narration of Homer's Odyssey, adapted from Samuel Butler's public-domain 1900 translation, told as a bedtime series for adults who want something old, absorbing, and calming to fall asleep to.

Episode 11 covers Book XVII of the Odyssey: Telemachus returns home to a tearful reunion with his mother Penelope, and the seer Theoclymenus tells her that Odysseus is already on Ithaca. Meanwhile Odysseus, still disguised as an old beggar, walks into town with the swineherd Eumaeus, enduring an unprovoked assault from the goatherd Melanthius along the way. At the gates of his own house, his old hunting dog Argos — abandoned and dying, but still alive after twenty years — recognizes him instantly and quietly passes away. Odysseus then enters his own hall as a stranger, begs bread from the suitors occupying his house, and is struck with a thrown footstool by the cruelest of them, Antinous, while his own son watches in silent fury.
