Errors with the vitamin D guidelines were exposed in 2014, yet the current vitamin D RDA remains around 600–1000 IU. Research challenging these guidelines has suggested that the actual vitamin D dosage needed is closer to 8895 IU per day, but this has not been adopted into current guidelines.

Our bodies can produce significant amounts of vitamin D3 from sun exposure, yet most people don’t get enough sun. The need for vitamin D also increases with obesity and certain chronic or autoimmune conditions. Adding to the confusion, vitamin D blood levels don’t necessarily tell the whole story about vitamin D activity within the cells, and there continues to be debate around optimal blood levels.

Vitamin D cofactors are crucial for proper vitamin D function in the body. Sometimes, a cofactor deficiency could be the cause of vitamin D deficiency symptoms. Magnesium and vitamin K2 work closely with vitamin D, and higher vitamin D intake can increase the need for these nutrients. Zinc is another important cofactor.

When taking 6000–10,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily, it’s beneficial to also take 100 mcg of vitamin K2 and 20 mg of zinc, along with adequate magnesium.
