At the center are Daejon Labrayae Love and Taylor Jamie Chan, two men accused—not convicted—of participating in a scheme federal prosecutors say targeted women across several states.

According to the federal allegations examined in this episode, Love portrayed himself differently depending on the woman he was targeting. Sometimes, he allegedly claimed to be a professional football player associated with the San Francisco 49ers. At other times, he presented himself as a wealthy real-estate investor. Prosecutors allege romantic relationships were then used to steer women toward fictitious investment opportunities.

How the 49ers Romance Scam Allegedly Worked

The alleged deception went far beyond creating a fake dating profile. The 49ers romance scam reportedly incorporated football-related social-media content, team gear, training imagery, luxury-lifestyle cues and multiple identities to create an apparently credible online persona.

Investigators described a custom 49ers helmet, training images in team gear, route-running footage, material filmed around Levi's Stadium and videos that implied connections with well-known NFL players. The objective, according to the episode, was to create a visual history that made the football persona appear established and authentic.

The case also illustrates an increasingly important problem in online verification: false corroboration. Search results, social-media posts, screenshots, videos and automated answers may appear to provide multiple sources of confirmation when they actually trace back to the same fabricated identity. The script makes the distinction succinctly: a screenshot isn't a bank record, a logo isn't proof of employment, and an AI summary isn't a professional football roster.

How the 49ers Romance Scam Turned Romance Into an Investment Pitch

Once trust had allegedly been established, prosecutors say the relationships began moving toward investment opportunities promising substantial returns. The 49ers romance scam then acquired another apparent source of credibility—a purported financial adviser.

Prosecutors allege Chan presented himself as Love's financial adviser and as the person who had helped build Love's supposed fortune into the tens of millions. Messages between the two could then appear to be professional investment communications, while coordinated calls allowed the romantic partner and supposed financial expert to reinforce each other's claims.

The alleged scheme also used fictitious bank and investment balances. A professional-looking dashboard displaying precise account balances and rapidly rising returns can create the appearance of legitimacy even though numbers displayed on a screen do not establish that an underlying investment or brokerage account actually exists.
