Episode 249: Why More Effort Can Make Thyroid Recovery Harder

Episode 249: Why More Effort Can Make Thyroid Recovery Harder

You can be doing everything you've been told is "healthy" and still feel like you're getting worse.

You cut calories. You cut carbohydrates. You exercise more. You add strength training, cardio, sauna, cold exposure, supplements, and more.

Then you look at your labs and see that your free T3 is low, so you add thyroid medication to try to bring that number up.

At some point, getting healthy can become a full-time job.

The problem is that more effort does not automatically produce more recovery. Sometimes, more effort becomes part of the load.

In this episode, I explain why the same strategy that helps one person can create a bigger mismatch for someone else, depending on their current physiologic state and available capacity.

In this episode, I cover:
  • Why doing "everything right" can still leave you feeling worse

  • The difference between a healthy stressor and a stressor your body can actually recover from

  • Why exercise, fasting, calorie restriction, sauna, cold exposure, and other interventions all require physiological resources

  • How energy availability can influence thyroid physiology, including T3 and reverse T3

  • Why a low free T3 should be interpreted in the context of the person, rather than treated as an isolated problem

  • How treating every abnormal lab value as another problem to fix can turn your recovery plan into another source of stress

  • Why raising a thyroid marker does not automatically mean you improved the underlying physiology

  • The potential trade-offs that can happen when you change one part of physiology

  • What to look at beyond the number you are trying to optimize

  • Why increased capacity, better recovery, and a more functional life are better measures of progress than simply having more "optimal" numbers

  • How to determine which health battles actually deserve your attention right now

The Bigger Question

The question isn't simply whether exercise, fasting, supplements, thyroid medication, or another intervention is "good" or "bad."

The better question is:

Can your body currently absorb this demand, recover from it, and become more capable because of it?

When capacity is high, you may be able to tolerate a significant amount of stress.

When you're in chronic strain, you have less room to absorb additional demands.

And when you're in overload, you may be spending resources faster than you can restore them.

That distinction matters because sometimes the thyroid pattern you're trying so hard to fix isn't actually the hill.

It may be the clue pointing you toward the hill you should actually be looking at.

What Does Recovery Actually Look Like?

Recovery shouldn't require your entire life to revolve around managing your health.

Instead, look at whether your overall capacity is improving.

Are you:

  • Sleeping better?

  • Recovering better?

  • Experiencing more stable energy?

  • Tolerating exercise better?

  • Able to handle a demanding day without paying for it for the next three days?

  • Able to travel without your physiology falling apart?

  • Able to occasionally go out to dinner or miss a workout without feeling like you've destroyed your progress?

  • Requiring fewer interventions instead of more?

  • Living a bigger life?

Those are signs that capacity is increasing.

The goal isn't to become better at fighting every possible health battle.

The goal is to understand your state, understand the load you're carrying, figure out what actually matters right now, and put your resources toward the things most likely to increase your capacity.

Sometimes that means doing more.

Sometimes it means doing things differently.

And sometimes it means having the discipline to stop doing something you were convinced was helping.
